Specifications Honor 20

It is no longer news that Huawei and its sub-brand Honor use proprietary Kirin processors in their smartphones. Honor 20 received the well-known from P20 Mate and P30 chipset HiSilicon Kirin 980. It is a 7nm processor with 8 cores and clocked at up to 2.6 GHz. It uses the artificial intelligence of a dual neuromodule. Together with the chipset, the Mali-G76 MP10 video accelerator works.

The smartphone came out in a single memory configuration. 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. These figures are not at all amazing, especially against the background of competitors. There is no microSD card here, there is only room for two SIM cards in the combo slot.

With the interfaces of the Honor 20, everything is also ambiguous. On the one hand, there are all modern wireless modules here. dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and much-needed NFC. The novelty even received an infrared port for controlling equipment. The bad news is that the Honor 20 doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio jack. The only port for wired connection here is, although Type-C, but only slow USB 2.0.

The photographic part of the Honor 20. is one of the weirdest parts of a smartphone. The phone has a main camera of four sensors. First and foremost. 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor with f / 1.8 aperture. This camera is used in many flagships (and not only in them) of 2019 and produces decent 12-megapixel images (48 megapixels in special mode only). Second sensor. 16MP f / 2.2 aperture, 117-degree field of view with fisheye suppression. But then the oddities begin. Firstly, a 2-megapixel sensor is installed here to create background blur. However, many manufacturers, including Huawei, abandoned these modules, because high-quality bokeh can now be obtained by software. Second oddity. 2 megapixel camera for macro shooting. And this is a completely strange decision, because the macro mode in the same Huawei P30 is assigned to the wide-angle sensor. And finally, the smartphone has no optical stabilization, only software based on “artificial intelligence”. What do we have in the bottom line? It is worth using only 48 and 12 megapixel sensors, everything else. pure marketing.

The front camera of Honor 20 has a resolution of 32 megapixels and is capable of creating animoji from people’s faces.

How to know if your phone supports fast charging?

The easiest verification method is to connect your smartphone to the charger and see what will be displayed at the bottom of the screen during the process. If it says “Fast Charging”, then the Quick Charge technology is working.

Equipment

The box with the smartphone that came to us for review also contains a charger, a USB cable, a clip for ejecting the SIM card tray and an adapter from USB Type-C to mini-jack for connecting a wired headset. The commercial version, which goes on sale in Ukraine, also includes a protective silicone case.

Hardware platform, shell

Like Huawei P30, Honor 20 is based on Hisilicon Kirin 980 SoC. RAM. 6 GB, internal storage. 128 GB, there are no models with other memory configurations, there is no possibility to increase the internal memory using a microSD card.

The Kirin 980 is manufactured using a 7 nm process technology and includes an eight-core CPU (two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores operate at frequencies up to 2.6 GHz, two more. up to 1.92 GHz, plus four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores with frequencies up to 1, 8 GHz), as well as a ten-core GPU Mali-G76 MP10. This is Huawei’s flagship SoC, and its performance is very high, at the level of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 in single-threaded benchmarks and slightly lower in multi-threaded.

Under a prolonged synthetic load, throttling turns on after a few minutes, however, even when performing benchmarks, the smartphone heated up frankly weakly, in normal use it became a little warm at its maximum.

When you turn on the “performance” mode (located in the battery settings), you can expect a performance increase of 5-15%, depending on the situation (gaming applications and benchmarks benefit more from it). At the same time, throttling stops being involved, and the smartphone quickly becomes “hot”; after a few minutes of work under such a load, apparently in order to save power and fight overheating, the screen brightness is greatly dimmed.

Honor 20 runs Android 9.0, supplemented by the proprietary Magic UI 2.1 shell. in fact, this is the same EMUI well known to us, but for the Honor brand. By default, Magic UI does not have an application menu, all of them are located on the home screen (by analogy with iOS and some other Android shells), however, if you wish, in the settings, you can switch to the interface that is familiar to Android users by returning the application menu to its place.

In the menu “system. system navigation” you can choose one of three control options: three traditional on-screen buttons, gestures on the virtual button “navigation bar”, which can be placed in any part of the screen, or on the screen (performed from the left, right and the bottom of the screen).

Additional system utilities include a theme manager, an “optimizer” (cleaning memory, blocking unwanted contacts, optimizing energy saving, etc.), a backup tool, Huawei Health, own audio and video players.

Honor 20 is equipped with one multimedia speaker, with good volume and fairly standard sound: the highs sound good, but the mids are already lower than we would like, and the bass is rather arbitrary. in general, nothing unusual.

The sound quality in the headset is more than sufficient for users who listen to music from a smartphone and do not buy separate high-fi players and headphones for this purpose for several hundred dollars; music lovers, on the other hand, can find the sound a little squeezed, with a slightly blurry bass and a slight lack of high frequencies.

To improve the sound in the headphones, a set of Huawei Listen audio effects is used, which can make the sound more juicy and voluminous, there is also a 10-band equalizer with presets for different music genres and even optimization for different types of headphones (including certain models of Huawei itself).

A year has passed since the release of the previous flagship in the Honor line, which means that the time has come for its successor. and today we have the Honor 20 on our review, which is a more affordable (and in some things simplified) analogue of the flagship in the older brand. Huawei P30.

Screen

The Honor 20 uses a 6.26-inch LCD screen with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9 and a resolution of 1080 × 2340 pixels. The display occupies 91.76% of the front panel, which is noticeably larger than the previous model in the line, Honor 10. The display is 0.16 inches larger than that of Huawei P30, and, as already mentioned, differs from it in that the front camera is located in a 4.5 mm hole in the upper left corner.

It is difficult to say what it will be easier for the user to get used to. to a cutout on the border of the image, but in the center, or to a full-fledged “hole”, but in the corner; if you want to make it less conspicuous, you can use a black bar along the top border of the screen (enabled in the settings “screen. other settings”. “notch”) or simply by using the home screen wallpaper shaded in this place.

The brightness of the screen changes in the range of 0.8. 370 cd / m², the maximum brightness value is enough to make it possible to make out the information on the display on a sunny day, however, in direct sunlight, the screen, of course, fades a lot, and you can see what is shown in camera viewfinder is very hard. The color gamut in the Vivid mode is quite large (only slightly less than that of AMOLED smartphones), the picture is very juicy and saturated, but with a noticeable cool tint. the color temperature of the Honor 20 is overestimated by default to

If you prefer a warm image, you can switch in the settings from the “standard” color temperature to “warm” (the temperature curve drops to

6800K, which turns out to be very close to the standard 6500K) or manually select the desired hue on the color wheel. Another available option is to turn on the “eye comfort” mode in the neighboring settings and use the slider to select its value to your liking. If you prefer calmer and more muted colors, you can switch to the “Normal” mode. here the color gamut is noticeably narrowed and roughly corresponds to the sRGB space.

Design and ergonomics

Honor 20 is offered in two colors: black (midnight black) and blue (sapphire blue), the second version was revised. The body is a glass “sandwich” with a glass back panel and an aluminum frame. The manufacturer likes to experiment with the back side coating, and Honor 20 is no exception. the “blue” body, depending on the viewing angle, plays with all shades from turquoise to deep purple, while glare and reflections shimmer in such a way that the resulting picture is created feeling of “depth”. It looks very interesting live in dynamics, but for some it may seem too vivid effect. in this case, it is better to pay attention to the calmer black version.

Unlike the Honor 10, which outwardly looked almost an exact copy of the Huawei P20, the Honor 20 differs markedly from the Huawei P30. the front camera is not located in the U-notch, but in the hole in the upper left corner of the screen. The bezels around the display are minimal, the bottom is only slightly thicker than the sides and top.

On the top panel you can find a noise canceling microphone and a light sensor, at the junction between the screen and the metal frame is the earpiece grill, which also houses the notification indicator. On the left side there is a compartment for SIM cards (two nanoSIM cards are supported, a memory card cannot be installed), on the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button combined with a fingerprint scanner. On the bottom edge there is a microphone, a multimedia speaker and a USB Type-C connector; Honor 20 does not have a mini-jack for connecting a wired headset.

Despite the impressive diagonal of the screen (more than six inches), the Honor 20 is perceived as an average smartphone in size and fits well in the hand, the thumb immediately hits the fingerprint scanner (by the way, it works very quickly and accurately, unlike on-screen scanners). and the smoothed side edges and the traditional 2.5D glass feel comfortable and do not cut into the palm. As for a glass “sandwich”, the smartphone turns out to be moderately slippery. it is impossible to say that it is somehow especially diligently trying to slip out of your hands. Weighing 182g, the Honor 20 feels a little heavier than you’d expect from its size.

Camera

The Honor 20 camera contains as many as four modules. The main one is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586, with f / 1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus (unlike the older model, Honor 20 Pro, there is no optical stabilization). It is complemented by an ultra-wide module (16 MP, f / 2.2, viewing angle 117 °, no autofocus), a macro module (2 MP, f / 2.4, fixed focus at a distance of 4 cm from the lens) and an auxiliary module for determining depth (necessary for the effect bokeh).

The interface of the camera application has not undergone any noticeable changes compared to the previous models of the line: the “artificial intelligence” switch is moved to the main screen, the viewfinder swipes are not used, the HDR modes, panorama, macro and a number of others are moved to the last item of the slider menu.

КТО ДОЛЬШЕ? Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro, Mi 9, Honor 20, 20 Pro, iPhone XS, Samsung Galaxy A70, Huawei P30 Pro

Despite the fact that the telephoto module available in the Honor 20 Pro is absent here, there is still a two-fold zoom in the camera application. judging by the quality of the images obtained, this is just a crop of the image from the main module. The picture from the wide-angle module turns out to be somewhat less saturated and with less detail, but on the whole it turns out to be quite decent.

In the daytime, pictures with the main camera are quite expected to be of high quality, with good detail, natural colors and almost complete absence of noise. The HDR mode, apparently, is turned on by default. in any case, in all contrasting scenes, its activation did not affect the result in any way, while the “normal” images clearly bore traces of HDR. For the most part, it acts quite delicately, but in some cases the pictures were obtained with noticeably lightened shadows, which caused the feeling of depth and the overall contrast and saturation of the image to suffer; unfortunately, there is no auto HDR disabled in the settings, and the only way to take a picture without it is to switch to Pro or Portrait mode.

Indoors and at dusk, detail is noticeably reduced: the picture is “blurred” by noise reduction and because of this it loses small details, for example, in grass or tree foliage. In night shots, the situation is expectedly aggravated. and if it is not so striking on a brightly lit street, then with a clear lack of lighting it will no longer be possible to take a frame with good sharpness and detail.

Night mode takes a series of shots for about 5 seconds, the result looks very impressive on a smartphone screen, especially in low-light scenes: the dynamic range is noticeably expanded, revealing details in shadows and bright areas of the frame. But with a more or less bright scene, as a result, you can get a slightly overexposed picture, first of all, in the form of an overly blue night sky.

What is in the Honor 20S: comparison with the Honor 20

What characteristics of the Honor 20S smoothly migrated to the new product from its predecessor? First of all, you pay attention to the IPS LCD screen with a diagonal of 6.26 inches and a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels. Dot density 412 per inch. According to the manufacturer, the display occupies 91.7% of the front panel. We see exactly the same numbers in the technical data sheet of Honor 20. The front camera is embedded in the screen of Honor 20S. The sensor with a resolution of 32 megapixels looks out of the circular cutout, which is located in the left corner of the screen. This is another feature that makes the Honor 20S related to the more expensive model.

The power system has not undergone significant changes. The smartphone is still powered by a 3,750mAh rechargeable battery. There is fast charging, but it is slightly weaker than in the Honor 20. If the flagship is charged from a 22.5 watt power supply, then the Honor 20S comes with a 20 watt adapter. However, this simplification is unlikely to greatly affect the charging speed. In many “minor” characteristics, the Honor 20S does not differ from the Honor 20 either. There is no memory card tray. The charger connects to the phone via Type-C. On the bottom there is a single media speaker, and there is no 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The fingerprint scanner in the Honor 20S is in the side button, not on the back or under the display. Not the most fashionable solution, but it is convenient to use such a sensor, and it works quickly. In Honor 20, the situation with the scanner is similar.

There are fewer cameras, but the main module is equipped with an IMX586 sensor with an ultra-high resolution of 48 megapixels. The same sensor is used in Honor 20, a review of which with examples of photos for the main camera you can read on our website. You will find a link to the review at the end of the article.

What’s missing in the Honor 20S

There is no auxiliary camera for portrait mode (depth sensor) with a resolution of 2 MP. The number of modules has been reduced to three (Honor 20 has four cameras), but we do not think that this will somehow affect the quality of the photo. The defocusing of the background is still carried out using software post-processing algorithms; an additional camera is not really needed for this. The wide-angle module has changed. The Honor 20S has an 8MP wide-angle camera, while the standard Honor 20 has a 16MP sensor. The third camera of Honor 20S. a 2 megapixel module for macro photography. is in both smartphones.

There is no flagship chip, and this replacement, perhaps, can be called a key one. The top-end Kirin 980 chip is definitely faster, plus it allows you to shoot videos in 4K resolution. Honor 20S camera does not shoot video with ultra-high resolution, its ceiling is 1080p at 60 frames per second.

There is no optical stabilization of the camera in the Honor 20S, but it is not in the standard Honor 20. The stabilizer is present only in the Pro-moved Honor 20 Pro, which costs much more than the hero of this publication. We smoothly move to the price.

Honor 20S: specifications

Key features of Honor 20S: Kirin 810 processor, which is manufactured according to the flagship 7 nm process technology, but has less power when compared to the top-end Kirin 980. Battery 3750 mAh, there is fast charging. The picture shows the IPS display with a diagonal of 6.26 inches and high resolution. Three cameras, the main module is equipped with a 48 megapixel sensor. If the specs of the Honor 20S sound familiar to you, don’t be surprised. Before us is a slightly simplified version of the flagship Honor 20. The chip has been changed, the number of main camera modules has been reduced, the power of the charger has been reduced by a couple of watts. Thanks to these changes, the price of Honor 20S has been significantly reduced. In China, the phone costs 70 less than the regular Honor 20 at the time of release.

All the characteristics of the Honor 20S, see the table, after which we will analyze the key nodes of the novelty in more detail. Let’s see what is left (compared to Honor 20), and what the developers had to give up in order to reduce the price.

Honor 20S presented: features and price

Honor 20S is a novelty of the popular Chinese brand, presented on September 04, 2019. This is a mid-range smartphone. The characteristics of the Honor 20S are fully consistent with this positioning, and the price of the device fits well into the middle segment. We will get acquainted with the technical data sheet of the new Honor phone and its cost in this material. And at the same time, let’s compare it with the usual Honor 20.

Honor 20S: price

The Honor 20S smartphone has already gone on the free sale. Those interested can purchase it in black, white or blue. The body is made of glass and is pulled together by a metal frame. On the back is the original texture with a gradient. How it all looks, you see in the pictures.

The price of Honor 20S, depending on the configuration, is:

  • RMB 1,899 (265) for the 6GB / 128GB package.
  • 2099 yuan (307) for a bundle of 8/128 GB.

Expensive or not, you decide. We will add that the usual Honor 20 currently costs 11999 hryvnia for 6/128 GB. A similar equipment will cost a Russian buyer 27,990 rubles.

Follow the link to find the characteristics of Honor 20 Pro and Honor 20 Lite (in Russia, the latter is sold as Honor 10i). In the Honor 20 review, there are examples of photos taken with the main, wide-angle module and a macro camera. Photos are uploaded in full resolution, without compression, you can estimate 100% crop. And compare the quality of the images taken with the main camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels and 48 megapixels.

Cameras

Feature of Honor 20. cameras. The smartphone has four main cameras.

The main camera is built on the Sony IMX586 image sensor. The top sensor among flagship devices provides a resolution of 48 megapixels (8000 by 6000 pixels), the pixel size is a record small 0.8 microns.

However, to improve the quality of the picture in low light, the smartphone applies a Bayer filter to each frame and merges the pixels. As a result, the image resolution is 12 megapixels. However, this setting can be turned off in manual mode and take pictures with a resolution of 48 megapixels.

The main camera takes high-quality photos in daylight and good ones in the dark.

In the camera settings, you can select the “Night Scene” mode. However, on automatic settings, it did not significantly affect the image quality.

The second camera is equipped with a wide-angle lens for panoramic shots, the third one for shots with the bokeh effect (blurring). All of these cameras have already become the “gentleman’s kit” for many flagships. Honor 20 stands out against this background with a fourth camera designed for macro photography.

A macro camera captures a whole new smartphone experience. With its help, it is now possible not only to look into the microcosm that is next to us, but also to capture it. over, macro photography, unexpectedly for the author, turned out to be a very exciting experience.

The macro camera has a fixed focal length of 4 cm. While it can only take pictures.

Artificial intelligence can be enabled in the camera settings. According to the manufacturer, it recognizes objects and optimizes settings. In particular, he understands 500 scenarios and 22 scene categories.

It is stated that depending on the subject of photography, saturation, brightness, contrast will change. However, having made several dozen pictures of different objects, the author did not notice any characteristic differences.

The main camera shoots 4K video, Full HD, HD ready 120 fps (4x slowdown), 240fps (8x slowdown), 960 fps (32x slowdown).

Traditionally, 4K video recording on a smartphone does not differ in quality from Full HD. Full HD mode at 60 fps shows good picture quality during daylight hours. Honor 20 is equipped with an effective video stabilization system. This is one of the significant advantages of a smartphone.

The ability to shoot video in 32x slow motion opens up ample room for experimentation. Unlike some flagships from other manufacturers, the Honor 20 has an automatic moving object recognition system. When the subject is in the frame, the camera starts shooting.

This is very convenient when it comes to fast moving objects.

If the smartphone immediately integrates the 32x slowdown into the video, then the 4x and 8x slowdown must be independently adjusted in the video editor. In this case, the smartphone simply writes video at a frame rate of 120 and 240 fps, respectively, but when playing the file, it outputs 30 fps.

Design and display

For testing, the EP received an Honor 20 with a back panel made in a blue gradient color. This means that the panel shimmers in many shades of blue from different angles.

The effect, according to the manufacturer’s representatives, is achieved using Triple 3D Mesh technology. The technology allows millions of miniature prisms to be applied to the bottom layer of the panel. When hitting these prisms, the light rays are refracted, providing the corresponding effect.

The panel looks nice and expensive. The manufacturer named this color Phantom Blue. True, after several days of careful handling of the device, the author found barely noticeable abrasions in the lower corner of the rear panel.

The power button is conveniently located. If the phone is in the left hand, the middle or index finger falls on it, if in the right. the thumb. The button has a built-in fingerprint scanner that works instantly.

The display occupies 91.6% of the front panel, it is frameless. A 4.5mm selfie camera is built into the upper left corner of the screen. Such an arrangement of the camera does not interfere with using a smartphone and is definitely much more convenient than the still popular solutions in the form of “droplets” or “eyebrows”.

Screen size. 6.26 inches, resolution. 2340×1080 pixels, pixel density. 412 PPI. Noteworthy is the high response speed of the display, although perhaps this is a subjective feeling.

Economic truth

The Honor 20 is the top device of the Chinese youth brand Honor, founded by Huawei in 2013. The brand was originally created to fight Xiaomi for a youth audience in the Chinese market.

The concept of the brand involves the launch of smartphones with advanced technologies at an affordable price, bold body colors, Focus on Internet sales. In Ukraine, these smartphones appeared at the end of 2018.

Honor 20 is interesting not only for the manufacturer’s promise of “an inexpensive competitor to top-end flagships”, but also for the success of the previous version. In 2018, the Honor 10 became the top-selling Honor lineup. than 3 million units of this model have been sold in the world in two months since the launch.

Processor, battery, interfaces

The Honor 20 has a top-end 8-core Kirin 980 processor. It is made using 7-nanometer technology. In the phone settings, you can select four operating modes for the device: default, productivity mode, power saving mode and super power saving mode.

In the default mode, the Honor 20 in the AnTuTu device performance testing program scored 288 thousand points, ahead of 68% of modern smartphones in terms of power. In productivity mode, the device scores 311 thousand points, ahead of 77% of devices.

It makes sense to turn on the productive mode if you play hardware-intensive games.
