What Is GoPro Subscription What Do You Get With It?

Wondering what the GoPro Subscription is and what you get for it? Here’s a detailed rundown of features, benefits, and fine print to be aware of.

In recent years, GoPro has been moving from a hardware-only camera manufacturer to a hardwaresubscription company. And you can see why. As much as subscriptions aren’t every user’s cup of tea, for the companies that offer them, there’s a lot to like—it’s reliable, recurring income from existing customers. The trick is to offer users enough value that they keep renewing their subscription.

GoPro Deals

I’ve been a subscriber since the program launched. But I don’t personally find all of its features equally useful. Some I use often–others I’d don’t use at all. So here’s my take on the pros and cons of the GoPro subscription.

GoPro’s subscription program has gone through different names. It’s now simply known as GoPro or GoPro Subscription. Before that, it was GoPro PLUS.

GoPro Subscription Features Benefits

Here’s a rundown of the key features and benefits you get with a GoPro Subscription.

NB: I’ve done my best to make sure that what I have posted here is accurate at the time of writing, and I’ve gathered the information from GoPro’s official documentation spread across various places. But it’s possible for GoPro to change terms, features, prices, and fine print without notice. So I recommend checking the information on GoPro.com before buying a GoPro subscription. To make that easier, I’ve tried to include direct links to where you can find specific current information.

Unlimited Cloud Backup Auto Uploads

Even the largest SD card and going to fill up eventually. And if you’re shooting with a GoPro’s high-bitrate video, that’s going to be sooner rather than later. And as reliable as memory cards generally are, they do fail sooner or later. So having a backup is just plain common sense.

Spare SD cards and dumping the data to a backup device, external hard drive, or computer are good steps for that. And the GoPro subscription adds another option: automated Cloud backup.

You could, of course, backup your data to a different Cloud service, such as Dropbox or Google Drive. The advantage of GoPro’s Cloud backup is that it can be automated from the GoPro app or even directly from the camera itself. And there are some useful sharing and editing features built in that work nicely with your GoPro footage.

Of course, that’s going to be more practical in some situations than others. Big video files mean you need a fast and reliable Wi-Fi connection to back them up in any practical way. That’s a given with any Cloud-based backup service.

GoPro’s Cloud service offers unlimited storage for footage captured on GoPro cameras (with the exception of the GoPro Fusion).

There are four methods to upload to the GoPro Cloud backup, including directly from the camera itself with some models. You can find quick guides for them here.

Discounts on New GoPro Cameras

If you already have an active GoPro Subscription, you can get discounted pricing on some of the newer models when you buy them through GoPro.com.

You can apply it to up to three cameras a year.

To see the discounted pricing, first sign in to your account and then go to the GoPro.com store.

It doesn’t apply to every model, but they’ve generally been offering the past few models (eg. HERO10 Black, Hero MAX, and HERO9 Black).

Up to 50% Off Accessories at GoPro.com Store

This is the feature I use most often, and in my case, it’s where the GoPro Subscription annual fee easily pays for itself.

GoPro sells its official accessories through its own store. They’ve even added some “lifestyle gear” as well, such as backpacks and hoodies.

With the GoPro Subscription, you can get up to 50% off accessories and gear you buy through the GoPro.com store. It doesn’t apply to everything, and not everything is the full 50% off.

You can apply it for a maximum of 10 items per year.

No-Questions-Asked Camera Replacement

If you break your camera for any reason, you can get a replacement. But it’s not quite as simple or as cheap as that sounds at first.

Of the GoPro Subscription features, this one is, to me, the least clear. While it sounds straightforward enough, it’s not quite as simple as getting a new replacement camera whenever you want.

The good news is that it’s a no-questions-asked, or a “for any or no reason,” replacement program. So if you accidentally drive over your GoPro or flood it with water, you can get a replacement. But there are conditions and also costs to factor in.

For starters, it’s not free. The marketing materials say “Fees apply,” but you have to go hunting to find out what those fees are (you can find them here). They’re actually listed variously as a “Trade-in Fee” or a “Claim Fee.”

The cost varies by camera model. But all of them are a lot cheaper than buying a new camera through regular retail. 1

You can use it for up to two cameras per year while your subscription is active.

And it doesn’t apply everywhere. You can find the current list of eligible countries here.

In general, it’s a like-for-like replacement, so long as that model is in stock. So you can’t send in a beaten up HERO3 to get the latest and greatest HERO10 Black, for instance. (GoPro has in the past run an upgrade trade-in offer where you can do just that, but this isn’t that, and that type of exchange is not currently being offered.)

This is the feature I’m personally least likely to use. Some of the advanced features in the Quik mobile editing app are only available when you have a GoPro Subscription.

You also need to have a GoPro Subscription to enable unlimited Mural imports and multi-clip edits of non-GoPro content.

How Much Does a GoPro Subscription Cost?

The GoPro subscription is currently priced at 49.99 per year.

It’s billed annually, upfront for the coming year. GoPro Plus used to have the option to be billed monthly, but the current version of the GoPro Subscription is only available billed annually.

In recent years, GoPro has often offered deals on their new cameras that includes the first year of a GoPro Subscription. In those deals, the cost of the first year is built into the deal price.

How to Get a GoPro Subscription

You can sign up for a GoPro Subscription as a standalone transaction directly on GoPro.com.

Or it can be included as part of a special deal when buying a camera on GoPro.com. In that case, you’ll see the GoPro Subscription listed and priced as a line item, with the camera’s price discounted to compensate.

How to Transfer a GoPro Subscription

If you’re buying a GoPro as a gift and have taken advantage of one of GoPro’s deals that includes a 1-year GoPro Subscription, it’s easy to transfer the subscription.

• Sign in to your GoPro.com account that you used to make the initial purchase.
• Go to My Account.
• Then choose the Transfer/Gift Subscription link.

This option is only available when creating a new account. Once you’re already activated the subscription, you won’t see the Transfer/Gift Subscription option available (which is why I haven’t been able to include a screenshot here).

Things Worth Knowing

The Latest Model: GoPro HERO11 Black

Released in the fall of 2022, the HERO11 is GoPro’s current model. Well, actually two models.

First, there’s the flagship Black that has all the bells and whistles and sets the standard for action cameras.

A couple of months later, they released Black Mini. It’s smaller and shares many of the flagship models capabilities, but it’s also stripped-down in important ways. For instance, it doesn’t have a touchscreen, its battery isn’t removable, and it shoots video only (so no photo mode).

Product Return Policy:

Any unused New Gear (non-service item) may be returned within 21 days from date of purchase for a full refund minus a 25% restocking fee and any applicable shipping fees.

All Used/Demo gear is sold as-is and cannot be returned, only a store credit will be issued minus a 25% restocking fee and any applicable shipping fees if returned within 14 days from the date of purchase.

After 21 days any unused product (non-service item) may only be returned for store credit. This credit amount is valid for up to 12 months from the original purchase date.

Deposits on gear purchases are not valid or refundable after 120 days from the date of original deposit.

All labels, tags, and original packaging must be return with the specific item. All refunds will be paid less the applicable shipping and restocking fees. Customer is responsible for all shipping cost drop ship fees associated with the return.

00 OVERVIEW

GoPro is a tech company that manufactures action cameras and develops complementary mobile apps with video-editing software. GoPro also offers a subscription service that provides free exchange service, automatic upload, unlimited Cloud storage, and more.

GoPro wanted a true gifting experience, where consumers can gift GoPro products and subscriptions before/after purchase. In addition, GoPro wanted us to effectively communicate the new gifting option across their website.

Our solutions provided a baseline for GoPro to jump-start its gifting project after a hiatus and were successfully implemented for their holiday season update in Q4 of 2022.

01 CORE PRODUCT EXPERIENCE

Build GoPro gifting awareness

Direct access to the gifting page via the navigation bar or the CTA on the seasonal banner.

Reassure gifting throughout the purchase process

Option to mark item(s) as gift in the product detail page and the shopping cart.

Reduce the anxiety of choosing the perfect gift

Curates a list of customized gifts based on the gift recipient’s lifestyle

Add a personal touch to gifting

Separate gift recipient information from gift giver and allow gift personalization in shopping cart.

02 PROBLEM SCOPE

GoPro has received a lot of customer feedback regarding the gifting problem because the temporary solution only allows users to transfer the products and subscription after they are purchased. In our first client meeting, we identified the need of initiating a new end-to-end true gifting experience for GoPro products and subscription. Thus, GoPro asked:

How might we allow our consumers to gift GoPro products and/or GoPro Subscriptions to their gift recipients?

03 RESEARCH

GoPro has no previous gifting methods. So, instead of conducting primary research on GoPro customers, we did market research and literature review to learn the best practices of eCommerce gifting. This also saved us time to conduct usability testing after design.

Informed us how other eCommerce platforms deal with online gifting for both physical products and subscriptions.

Provided knowledge of eCommerce gifting acquired from eyetracking, user testing, and diary studies.

04 SYNTHESIS

However, this method did not effectively provide us with any new insights. The patterns and themes were already clearly defined, so there was no need to re-cluster the research

Instead, we started generating some design guiding principles based on the research to inform our next steps.

05 IDEATION

Our intial user flow focused on different scenarios of gifting.

Based on the research inights and edge cases provided by our GoPro clients, we charted out all the possible paths a gifter would take on the GoPro website in order to purchase a gift.

Then, we layed out logic flow dedicated to the gifter’s interaction on the website

The logic flow presented creative opportunities for gift awareness, gift selection, and the checkout process.

Before delving into design, I guided my teammates to brainstorm solutions with crazy 8s.

I listed some guiding questions to help my team generate creative solutions for gift awareness, gift selection, and the checkout process. Through this exercise, I came up with several personalization ideas in checkout–which our client, GoPro, really encouraged me to further explore and work on later in the process.

06 ITERATION

To ease the design process, we focused on designing the happy flow.

Our clients and the team went through several rounds of design auditing before we prototyped and tested our solutions.

07 USER TESTING

We evaluated our design decisions with usability testing.

We recruited 8 GoPro and 8 non-GoPro customers to test our prototype and improved our solutions based on the results.

Customers were confused by the language we used in the subtitles and CTA buttons. They believed that only that specific GoPro camera HERO10 on the banner was giftable. Thus, we eliminated misleading language to make the call to actions more straightforward and intuitive.

Customers were thrown off by the overwhelming amount of information presented in the gifting page. We decided to clean up the visual design to reduce mental load and use positive, actionable language to encourage users to purchase gifts.

Customers thoroughly enjoyed the customization features in the checkout. However, they wished there was more detail in whose information we were collecting and how the gift and gift message would be delivered. We added subtitles to improve clarity of the gift delivery process.

08 SOLUTION

Raise customers’ awareness of the gifting through the CTA button on the seasonal banner and the gifting page listed on the navigation bar. This immediately informs and encorages customers to gift a GoPro product.

Indicate and reassure customers of the option to gift by making products giftable on the PDP and throughout the checkout process. This allows customers to acknowledge that GoPro gifts are treated as a special type of purchase along with gift-specific services.

Ease customer’s anxiety to pick the perfect gift through providing top gift recommendations and curating giftee-targeted gifts list after taking a short quiz. This helps customers make easier purchasing decisions by surfacing suitable products.

Enable intimate gifting experience through customizing gift delivery time and personalized message. This adds a personal touch to an online/delivered gift.

09 REFLECTION

Validate designs with more users

Surprisingly, we learned a lot from user-testing our high-fidelity wireframes. We would like to test and iterate our wireframes more rounds to refine our design solution.

Conduct more in-depth research on different types of users

Our solution focused on developing the simplest path that a user would take to gift a GoPro product. Yet, we are also interested in understanding and designing for different target users. (A parent gifting a high-school filmmaker might be very different from a friend gifting a snowboarder in their thirties).

Be intentional. Ask good questions.

When GoPro first presented their prompt, out team believed that gift cards were a potential solution that would resolve all the problems GoPro had. Questioning our clients in the first meeting was not easy. However, our client’s response gave us more in-depth insights on what our stakeholders were looking for in gifting – which even prompted me to emphasize personalization in the checkout process.

There is no standard design process.

I was so used to starting my projects with research. However, our clients suggested we quickly research the best practices of eCommerce gifting and FOCUS more on designing the gifting process. Eventually, we had more time to validate our designs with research at the end.
