What can be used as a stylus?

Another simple option: we take a metal tube (you can take an antenna from an unnecessary radio), stick an antistatic sponge into it (you can find it on any radio market), and cut this sponge in order to give it an aesthetic shape. Stylus ready!

What can be used instead of a stylus for a tablet?

Option: you can replace the stylus for the tablet with a metal tube (for example, a piece of a broken off old antenna), into which an antistatic sponge is stuck. These sponges are sold on radio markets. For beauty, you can cut the sponge, and that’s it. you get a ready-made stylus. If there are no scrap materials at all, it doesn’t matter.

Homemade stylus for iPad

By inventing the legendary iPhone, released back in 2007, Steve Job made a real revolution. controlling the phone became possible with your fingers! But why not use your usual stylus? The answer is simple: you take it out, then you take it away, then you take it out again, and, in the end, you lose it. Nevertheless, for some programs, primarily for drawing, this accessory is required. In this regard, we will consider the question of how to make a stylus for the iPad with your own hands and from handy materials.

Making a stylus. the way

The first method is the fastest and simplest, but the present invention will be disposable. The fact is that the salt water used in its construction will dry out quickly. Such an accessory will be enough for several hours, but after that it will need to be moistened in water.

To create such a device, you will need:

  • Empty pen
  • Insulating tape
  • Scissors / threads
  • Sanitary stick / cotton wool
  • Foil
  • Salt
  • Water

This method is clearly shown in this

First, roll the foil into a tube and place the handle in the empty cavity so that the foil takes up all the space in it, sticking out a little. Then wrap the protruding piece of foil with a veil, securing it with thread, or insert half of the sanitary stick into the handle so that the soft tip sticks out.

Then, wrap foil over the entire handle and secure the material with duct tape. All parts of the accessory must be in close contact with each other.

In order for the device to work, you need to place the tip of the homemade stylus in salt water for a few seconds. We need salt water to conduct energy. Your stylus is now ready!

What is a stylus for??

A stylus is a small, bunched or pen-shaped writing wand that can be controlled by a computer graphics tablet or touch-sensitive devices. Today, a huge variety of these accessories are made, but you can make a stylus for the iPad with your own hands.

  • The accessory is very convenient when writing on the screen, because it is not very convenient to display symbols with your fingers
  • To work with graphic editors, tables or diagrams, the stylus is simply necessary, since small elements require high precision. This is why the stylus is the best tool for designers and artists.
  • Using a stylus will make your screen less dirty
  • If you think about hygiene, the stylus is much less likely to carry bacteria than dozens of hands touching the screen.
  • Game lovers will find it much more convenient to use a stylus rather than fingers
  • And, of course, for girls who wear long nails that prevent their fingertips from touching the screen, a stylus is the best solution.

Making a stylus. the way

The second method will help you create a more durable stylus.

To invent it, you will need:

  • A pen
  • Pliers
  • Protected wire
  • A piece of polyethylene foam

First, remove the rod and all other parts from the handle, leaving only the tube. Cut off a piece of polyethylene foam so that it can fit in the handle, but still grip tightly. Cut a piece of shielded wire so long that it is 2-2.5 times longer than the handle. Free the part of the wire that extends beyond the length of the handle from the protective rubber (in simple words “strip” the wire).

Wrap the bare wire around half a piece of polyethylene foam. Insert the structure into the handle so that the free part of the polyethylene foam sticks out of the handle by a centimeter.

Now, in your stylus, one side of the pen is covered with polyethylene foam, and the other end of the wire sticks out of the other. Separate the protective rubber from the protruding end and coil the wire around the handle. Secure it with duct tape. Now smooth the end of your stylus a little and it’s ready.!

If you like, you can make the stylus tip of any size. Thus, you will have the perfect tool for controlling iPad, and especially for drawing.

It all started with a discussion on the digitization of handwritten formulas. During the discussion, I came up with the idea of a very simple design of an electronic pen, which could be used to write on the surface of the touchpad (Touch Pad) of any laptop. I was so interested in this idea that I decided to make such a feather, although there was no particular need for it. Apparently, the fact is that my next project stalled, and a little respite was needed.

To understand why the touchpad cannot be used with any object, such as a pencil, you need to figure out how it works.

The touchpad is a touch panel that works on a capacitive principle. Capacitive sensors are located inside the panel, which react to changes in capacitance introduced by a person’s finger. To reduce recognition errors of this very finger, the touch panel also reacts to the capacity of the human body, which it registers through the finger touching the panel.

In general, the task was to trick the touchpad and slip it with a regular plastic handle instead of a finger. As it turned out, this is easy to do. It is enough to choose a metal washer of a suitable size and attach a small piece of wire to it. The wire can be passed into any hollow tube, for example, a body from a felt-tip pen or a ballpoint pen.

The initial project was very simple. I installed the button inside the body from the felt-tip pen and propped it up from the inside with a piece of thick cardboard so that the cardboard was firmly stuck between the button and the body.

Make a premium DIY stylus in 1.5 minutes!! for tablet/phones

I assumed that it would be possible to write characters by pressing this button each time. But, even after the first test of the pen, it became clear that writing and pressing this button at the beginning of each element of the letter is extremely inconvenient. After all, we are already used to the fact that the line begins when the pen is pressed against the paper or tablet.

How it works?

So, the nib had to be slightly modernized by adding a stylus pressure sensor to it. In the drawing, the final version of the nib.

  • Tube (cambric).
  • Tailor’s pin.
  • Silicone part of the assembly from the keyboard.
  • Brass plate.
  • Double sided tape.
  • PTFE film.

This drawing is to explain how the nibbler works.

One element of the nib is a silicone pimple, which is used in computer keyboards, remote controls, etc. This assembly unit required minimal rework. I just removed the contact pad made of harder rubber from its inner surface.

This dome-shaped rubber band holds the brass plate and allows you to tilt the pen while keeping the plate horizontal in relation to the touchpad surface.

An ordinary tailor pin passes through the middle of this elastic band, which, together with the brass plate, is a contact pair. The latter, when you click on the writing node, closes the left mouse button.

To ensure a good glide of the pen on the surface of the touch panel, a fluoroplastic (Teflon) film is glued to the brass plate using double-sided tape.

How to make a mini tablet and a stylus for a laptop out of all the trash.

That is, we are talking about an electronic pen with which you can write handwritten texts or draw.

Construction and details

The diameter of the brass plate should mimic the contact surface of the finger. Testing has shown that laptop touchpads work stably with a plate diameter of about 10mm.

I connected the brass plate to the feather using a piece of MGTF wire, which I twisted into a spiral. I glued a fluoroplastic film to the plate using double-sided tape. Just the day before, I used this technology to restore the sliding of a computer mouse.

ipad, stylus

The second wire was soldered to the pin using active flux. The pin was fixed in the writing unit of the felt-tip pen with the help of two PVC tubes put on the pin, which were previously the insulation of wires of different diameters.

The connecting cable, made of flexible wire, is fixed in the cork of the felt-tip pen.

I glued the brass plate with the silicone pimple using silicone sealant. To do this, I built such a simple press.

Well, I don’t know how this gum is correctly called.

In order to connect the pen pressure sensor to the computer, I used a 3.5mm jack plug. I installed the corresponding socket in the mouse, even when I was setting up this homemade product. The socket is connected to the pins of the left mouse button.

DIY iPad stylus

Doing something with your own hands has always been highly appreciated.

Especially when it comes to modern devices and accessories for them. Probably every happy owner of an iPad at least once tried to adapt some thing as a stand for his tablet.

With the release of numerous drawing and design programs on the iPad, there is an urgent need for a stylus. If for some reason it doesn’t suit you, you don’t like it, or you simply cannot purchase a ready-made stylus. Try making a DIY stylus for iPad. There are several ways to make your own iPad stylus. This article describes two of them. 1 way how to make a stylus for iPad with your own hands: A very simple way. However, the stylus obtained in this way will be disposable. It will be enough for just a few hours. Then you will need to moisten. To create a stylus, you will need:. an empty ballpoint pen. scissors. electrical tape (you can use threads). a hygienic stick (a small piece of rag). foil. water. salt First you need to twist the foil with a tube and insert it into an empty pen so that it fills in the pen all the space and looked out a little. Next, wrap the foil with a piece of rag or cut the stick into 2 parts and insert into the foil. In this case, the cotton head should be in contact with the foil. After that, wrap the handle itself tightly with foil. All elements must be in close contact with each other. For beauty, you can wrap the pen with duct tape or thread. Those who are fond of knitting will be able to make an original case for their stylus.

Your stylus only needs water to work. Dip the handpiece in salted water before use. This is necessary for conductivity. After that, your stylus is ready! 2 way to make a stylus for iPad yourself: This method will help you make a stronger and more durable stylus. To do this, you will need:. an empty ballpoint pen. pliers. protected wire. polyethylene foam (used as a lining for radio components). The first step is to cut the polyethylene foam so that the desired part is about the thickness of a ballpoint pen. Next, you need to peel off the insulation from the tip of the wire, stick it into the polyethylene foam and twist it around it. Then carefully thread the wire through the handle. Leave the tip with the polyethylene foam a few millimeters out.

Expose the rest of the wire and wrap it around the outside of the handle. Glue the tip with electrical tape. For beauty and convenience, at the end, you need to trim the protruding end of the polyethylene foam, making it round. Check it out. you get a great stylus!

Most popular home styluses

The easiest option is to take a cotton swab and wrap it in foil. Swipe the screen and check its action. Be sure to touch the foil with your fingers.

A cotton swab and foil are all you need for a tablet pen From a metal tube

Take a metal tube, for example, an antenna from an unnecessary radio is suitable, stick an antistatic sponge into it, which can be purchased at any radio market. Cut this sponge to give it a nice and pleasing shape. But make sure that it is not very thin, as the screen may not react.

With your own hands, you can create a wonderful tablet drawing tool that glides well and softly on the screen, evokes responses and does not leave any traces behind From a ballpoint pen

If you want your mowing line to look thin when drawing, you have to sweat a little. Take a regular ballpoint pen and wrap the nib in some soft material. You can curl the paper tightly, around which there will be an antistatic film, so that there is sufficient contact area. Now wrap the foil around the pen so that it touches the foil on one end and your fingers on the other. You can start drawing! Please note that the rod must be removed from the handle.

The most basic rule, without which the stylus will not work, is the use of conductive materials from fluoroplastic

It turns out that such a pleasant and necessary thing is always at hand.

You can place this prepared piece of Teflon in a pen if you want your stylus to look more elegant. Or you can make a full-fledged rod out of fluoroplastic-4 and wrap it with any material you want: metal, plastic, wood, and so on.

PTFE glides perfectly and does not scratch the screen

Stylus from antenna

Some resources advise making a homemade stylus from a segment of a telescopic antenna by placing a roll of food foil into the working end of such a stylus, the working end is wrapped from above with the same foil so as not to damage the screen.

In general, this design is efficient, but it requires strong pressure on the screen, I think this option is not suitable for long-term use.

And of course, the best result was shown by the factory-made stylus purchased here at Aliexpress.

In transport condition, the stylus length is 125 mm.

The working element is covered with a screw cap.

In working position, the cap can be screwed onto the back of the stylus, while the total stylus length is 140 mm.

The weight of the device is 20 g. The stylus works reliably, with its help it is easier to perform small manipulations on the tablet screen than with your fingers. Article author. Denev.

At the moment (2017), the most common touch control technology is capacitive screens, which react to touching the working surface with a conductive object. Most modern tablets and smartphones use this technology. details about this technology can be found at the following links.

First of all, such a screen is focused on using your fingers, but in some cases it is desirable to have a separate stylus for working with a capacitive screen. For example, if you often have to touch the screen with dirty hands. It is quite simple to make such a stylus, almost any conductive object will do, the main thing is that it does not damage the surface of the screen and gives a reliable response. There are a lot of descriptions of such structures on the Internet, for example, such a construction. But it requires regular wetting of the stylus, which is not convenient, and in general, the increase in humidity does not benefit any electronic device.

Homemade styluses

The rather unusual design of the capacitive stylus is a ring of conductive material, about 1 cm in diameter, attached to a pen made of the same material. Such a construction is described here. It seemed to the author that such a stylus could be made much easier by folding a suitable piece of single-core wire in the required shape.

The part of the wire that the user holds with his fingers is stripped of insulation. In general, the design is efficient, although sometimes the screen misses the operation.

The idea arose to further simplify the construction of a homemade “stylus” simply to strip one end of the wire by 4-5 cm, and roll the other insulated end, about the same length, into a spiral. But this design turned out to be not very efficient, the screen regularly skips commands.

Stylus or finger?

Note also that any kind of stick-like input could have been used for resistive screens. With capacitive displays, such a Focus will not work. This is due to their design. We will not go into details, but just say that a conductor of electric current is needed to work on a capacitive display. Since the human body is an excellent conductor, our fingers do an excellent job of entering data on the touch screen.

When Apple introduced the iPhone, in which the touch screen worked and responded to human fingers (capacitive display), then people began to think about, but do you need to buy a stylus if it is not always with you? However, for some tasks, the convenience of using a finger on the touchscreen is at risk, for example, if you are drawing on a tablet, it is very difficult to draw thin mowing lines when using your hands. This situation is familiar to very many artists or just lovers of drawing, when a dense forest appears instead of an elegant eyebrow.

mowing lines made with a stylus are thin and graceful, so you can draw whenever you want

How To Make A Stylus Using Any Pen/Pencil

It turns out that there are still times when the thought is spinning in your head: “If only the stylus is right now!” But modern tablets and smartphones are practically not supplied with such devices in the kit. And then there is a need to additionally purchase this miracle of technology. What then is the decision of Apple, which releases the iPad Pro and shows its work with a special stylus Apple Pencil, which must be purchased separately. Naturally, this is a disregard for the corporation’s attitude towards its customers, who clearly do not want to pay more than nine thousand rubles for a wand, which could be added to the set of such an expensive tablet. So let’s find out how to make a stylus for a tablet with your own hands.?

Stylus from cable

The third option for an improvised stylus can be a cut of a coaxial television cable, about 10 cm long.From the working end of such a stylus, bend or cut off the central core in order not to damage the screen of the device, and the stripped braid should be wrapped around the external insulation, so that reliable contact with the screen.

Despite its simplicity, this design option turned out to be the best of all homemade styluses.

How to make?

What can you use instead of a tablet stylus? This question arises for many people who are impatient, for example, to draw a beautiful drawing on their device. Let’s then try to make a stylus with our own hands! This is not very difficult, because there are so many ideas and methods for this. Please note that some materials may scratch the display, so check only on a screen with a film. So, let’s take a look at the most popular “home” styluses.

Modern touch screens are of the capacitive type. This means that it will respond to finger touch. Previously, touch devices had resistive displays that made it difficult to recognize fingers, and they worked with a stylus or long nails. It is worth noting that despite the ease of use of the stylus, they were constantly at risk of being lost.

    Working stylus without water and cotton swab

    You can do without water or a cotton swab. In this case, you need to prepare:

    • telescopic antenna from a TV or radio receiver;
    • nylon stocking;
    • threads;
    • scissors.

    In all fairness, a nickel plated antenna with a rounded tip can act as a stylus right away: try it and see for yourself. At the same time, there are concerns that the metal will scratch the display coating. For this reason, we cut off a piece of stocking, wrap the tip with a cloth and fix it with a thread.

    We cut off the excess “tails” with scissors. Synthetic materials can be gently melted in the flame of a match.

    This is what the finished craft looks like. You can try!

    Three more options with a cotton swab without the use of foil

    Let’s try to make the stylus even better with our own hands. In previous designs, it became necessary to constantly keep the tip moist, which is not very convenient. In this case, this problem is solved by wrapping the cotton wool with a film. Looking ahead, I will say that the purchased stylus is inferior to the homemade stylus in the ease of sliding the tip across the screen. We’ll look at three stylus body options, while the tip will be the same.

    To make it, we again use a cotton swab, moisten it with water and wrap it with a piece of polyethylene 2×2 cm in size.As you know, polyethylene does not conduct an electric current, but in this case, the film plays the role of a capacitor dielectric, through which an electric discharge occurs at the point of touching the screen.

    As a body, you can use a thin aluminum rolled into a tube, extracted from a beverage can. The material can be easily cut with ordinary scissors, but you need to be careful not to get hurt. We insert a ready-made tip into the tube and proceed to testing.

    Another option is to use a plastic fountain pen or felt-tip pen as a holder. You also need to insert the previously prepared tip into it. To provide an electrical connection between the tip and the fingers, we use copper wire. It must first be cleaned of insulating varnish with an emery cloth. Then we wrap the lower third of the fountain pen with wire so that it covers the tip and provides electrical contact.

    It is even cooler to use a telescopic antenna from a radio receiver. From it you need to remove the three upper knees and insert the prepared tip into the hole. It looks solid, but not everyone will like the weight of such a stylus. The following video demonstrates the stated “live”.

    What is the point of a homemade stylus?

    If the simplest device is relatively inexpensive, then a multifunctional stylus like Apple Pencil will cost several thousand rubles. Expensive accessories for advanced gadgets Apple, Samsung, as well as graphic tablets allow you not only to draw simple shapes on the computer screen, but also register the degree of pressure with an accuracy of several thousand levels. In addition, advanced devices can be charged from the phone and control the camera or player via Bluetooth.

    Of course, we will not create complex electronic devices with our own hands, and we are talking about the simplest devices from scrap materials. In fact, a DIY tool allows you to sharpen your finger and create thinner mowing lines on a touchpad screen, laptop or iPhone. You may want to do some homemade work before deciding to purchase an expensive device. Many people are interested in the experiment as such, in order to do a little work.

    Mobile phone screens are different

    Phone screens are resistive and capacitive. This circumstance is decisive when choosing a homemade design. In this case, the first of them reacts to physical pressure. When pressed, the outer membrane of the display flexes and the thickness of the resistive layer decreases, which leads to a decrease in its resistance at the point of impact.

    The resulting signal is scanned and processed by the phone’s controller. Thus, the stylus for such a screen should be firm enough, but not scratch the cover of the monitor. Currently, this type of screen is practically not used in iPhones, smartphones and tablets, but remain in e-books.

    The capacitive display does not need to be pressed, and it is triggered when conductive objects touch its surface. Our body conducts an electric current, and when the finger touches the display of the gadget, the capacitor is discharged at the corresponding point. The screen of the gadget has a matrix structure, and the phone’s controller reads at what point on the grid the energy leaked. Thus, both the stylus tip and its surface must conduct electric current without scratching it.

    It is quite easy to define the type of display. You need to run the blunt end of a plastic pen or felt-tip pen over the monitor. If the phone responds, its screen is resistive. Otherwise, the display is capacitive.

    Stylus for phone and tablet: how to do it yourself at home

    It is not difficult to buy a factory stylus, and the simplest models cost tens of rubles. At the same time, there are situations when a homemade stylus is in no way inferior to a factory one. We will discuss how to make a stylus for a tablet or phone on our own and consider the most successful designs.

    Making a stylus from a pencil and foil without using water

    We have already agreed to do without water. We return the foil, take the pencil, foil, narrow tape and scissors. We act:

    • wrap the pencil with foil in several layers so that it protrudes beyond its edges;
    • from the flat side of the pencil, bend the foil onto its end and form a flat area;
    • it remains to carefully close the flat end of the pencil with a strip of tape so that it remains as even as possible.

    You can try a homemade computer pen. The tool will work without the tape, but the foil will scratch the screen. Let me remind you that the tape does not conduct electric current, but it acts as a dielectric of a capacitor and, with a small thickness, does not interfere with its electric discharge. If the stylus does not work, you need to align its working end.

    When working with the tool, you may be tempted to use the sharp end of the pencil to provide a thinner mowing line for the screen when drawing. However, when the area of contact with the screen decreases to a certain size, the stylus will stop working.

    Making a stylus with your own hands for a capacitive display

    Screens of this type are most often used in iPhones, smartphones and iPads. Let’s consider several design options. In all cases, you will need a soft, well-sliding tip that conducts an electrical current. You will also need a rod in which the tip is fixed. If the shaft is not metal, it is necessary to provide an electrical connection between the tip and the fingers of the hand using an electrically conductive element.

    Working stylus made of pen and foil

    Let’s go ahead and further improve the quality of the homemade stylus. We’ll use the Q-tip, the foil, and the fountain pen body again to make the stylus easier to use. A fountain pen is required with a nib that rolls onto the writing side. We act in steps:

    • cut off one side of the cotton swab with scissors;
    • unscrew the tip of the fountain pen, remove the rod and insert a cotton swab instead;
    • we wrap the lower part of the pen with foil so that it is guaranteed to come into contact with the tip and ensure contact with the fingers;
    • the upper part of the foil can be fixed with tape so that it does not unfold;
    • it remains to moisten the tip of the stylus in water, and you can start working.

    Of course, the cotton wool will have to be moistened periodically as the stylus performance deteriorates. From time to time, the tip needs to be adjusted with your fingers so that it does not become too wide.

    A good computer pen can be made in the same way from a used marker. The tip is already present, so it remains to wrap its lower part with foil, as indicated above.
