How to Resolve “iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup was corrupted”?

When I try to sync my iPhone with my computer, I get the following message:

Delete the backup for this iPhone and then try again.

However, there is no way to delete the backup here. Where are backups stored / how can I delete a backup?

This is iTunes version 10.5.3 running under Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I had the same problem and didn’t know where it came from. I had a jailbroken iPhone 3G and switched to an iPhone with an invulnerable iPhone 4 i.e. I moved the backup to a new phone that worked. Some time later, however, I received an error message. I tried the solution above, I even deleted all backups, even those not related to this phone, but the error persisted.

  • Close iTunes
  • Make sure your explorer shows hidden files
  • Go to C: \ Users \ username \ AppData \ Roaming \ Apple Computers \ MobileSync \ backup

I had the same problem: Can’t restore a previous backup even using right click on my iphone in iTunes.

I had a nice backup in the directory:

C: \ Documents and Settings \ myuser \ Application Data \ Apple Computer \ MobileSync \ Backup, but iTunes won’t detect it.

So I copied the complete “Backup” directory to a different location (copied, not moved). Then I create a new iphone with iTunes after restoring the ipsw file with the same name as before.

I made a sync backup.

At the end, I checked the “Backup” directory and saw that iTunes had recreated the same folder as the one I had copied earlier.

This time in Ituens, when I right click on my iphone, I have the “restore from backup” menu. But before choosing this option, I just renamed the new created directory in Backup to xxx.old and copied the saved one (same name) to C: \ Documents and Settings \ franckca \ Application Data \ Apple Computer \ MobileSync Directory \ Backup.

When the restore was complete, I restored the last backup.

I also ran into this problem. It turns out that after I backed up my iPhone, Windows Defender discovered a file from one of the apps that I downloaded as malware. When I looked at the file, it was indeed malware, but was deleting it from the backup directory so that the restore process fails.

It was only when I restored the file to the backup directory that the restore was successful. I highly recommend disabling antivirus and malware detection programs when performing iPhone backups and restores.

Cleaning up your iCloud library

If files are so valuable, why not download them through iCloud.com and upload them to a separate drive? For some reason I am sure that most people do not need most of the content in the media library.

Delete / reduce device backup

With the removal, I think everything is clear. Rarely, but it happens that it makes no sense to make a backup for a device. For example, I have an iPod. now it serves exclusively for music.
