A promising brand: Will Baseus become the king?

Information about the Shenzhen-based brand is limited and somewhat confusing.

On their international website, they indicate 2011 as the “birth date” of the brand, although on Amazon, as well as on the Chinese website, they indicate 2009; in any case, Baseus is a young brand.

The truth is that the brand takes its name from “Base on User”; initially, it was dedicated to the manufacture of gadgets for cell phones in general, that is, it was not born as a brand specialized in power banks, in fact, neither is it currently, as it is subdivided into:

  • Baseus Gamo
  • Baseus Audio
  • Baseus Lighting
  • Baseus Automotive: launching products such as battery jump starters and tire inflators.
  • Baseus Home Appliance

However, one of its strong points are its cell phone charging products, such as chargers, charging cables, or, which we will talk about in detail, its power banks.

On the other hand, Baseus seems to follow the path of other renowned Chinese brands such as Ugreen, Tronsmart and Xiaomi itself.

When analyzing Baseus’ product range we see how it tries to follow the market lines of other brands: low like Ugreen, premium design like Anker or advertising in the style of Xiaomi.

The most outstanding models of the brand are the powerful 30000mAh power banks, a huge capacity at a low price, although, as a major drawback, they have considerable weight (they reach almost one kilogram).

Returning to the history of the brand, we must highlight that 2011 was an important year for them, with the opening of their flagship store in Guangzhou, currently, they have more in cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen and Eastbourne.

In 2017 Baseus was present in more than 180 countries around the world, impressive! However, it was in 2019 that it established the Baseus Laboratory, finally becoming more than just a brand that assembles products.

As we said above, it is important to emphasize that Baseus still has a long way to go:

Its expansion in the Western market must still continue to consolidate (in Europe, it only has one store in the UK), the guarantees, as well as the quality and presentation of the product, must be improved (especially the packaging)… although, if it continues on the right track, everyone will talk about it as happened with Xiaomi in the past.

I already have a Baseus power bank: what should I know?

Both after-sales service and warranty are two aspects that cannot be overlooked if you want to buy a product that is reliable and durable; in the case of Baseus you should consider the following:

Baseus USB-C Power Bank review: A good way to charge up your Surface on the go

These days keeping your devices powered up is important, especially when you’re spending more time in meetings and more time working. Usually, you might charge up with a regular outlet, but the benefit of USB-C means you also can use power banks to juice up your devices when you’re not near an outlet.

The Surface Pro 8 is one such device that has a USB-C port, and with it comes the ability to use PD power banks. Baseus was kind enough to send me their latest product, the Baseus power bank (60, Amazon) for review, and I think it’s a good way to charge up your Surface devices on the go.

The Baseus USB-C power bank is a product that will match the premium finish of your devices. The Surface Pro 8 sports an aluminum finish, and the Baseus power bank fits that with an all aluminum-alloy design. For the high price of 60, it feels very nice in the hands. Baseus even says that the design can help dissipate heat during the charging process. It’s something I noticed when using the power bank to charge my Surface when under heavy loads. It didn’t get too hot.

Another signature feature of this power bank is the numerical LED charge indicator. With this, you just tap the side button to see how much power is left in the bank itself. It shows the battery level at all times when charging, as well as the output in volts and amps. Super useful for keeping an eye on when you might need to recharge the power bank itself.

As far as ports go, there is one 65W PD USB-C port and two 30W quick charge USB-A ports. You also have the option to charge the power bank with a micro USB input, which I think is a waste. I think a second USB-C port would have been better. It is 2022, and USB-C should be standard on all power banks for input charging, especially since it’s become more of the universal standard.

best, baseus, power, bank

Micro USB also means the bank itself is slow to recharge. It takes about 2 hours to fully recharge to 100% and a physical charging brick is not included. Using USB-C, though, lowers recharge time to around 1 hours.

Baseus also sent me their separate USB desktop charging station, and it’s what I used to charge up this power bank with the included micro USB cable. The charging station sits on my desk as a convenient way to plug in my dedicated Surface Laptop charger, as well as 100-watt USB-C cables for my MacBook, Nintendo Switch, and other devices.

How long it lasts

This Basus power bank is rated at 20,000 mAh with a 65W output. Interestingly, though, the bottom of the bank mentions a rated maximum capacity of 12,000 mAh, and also a capacity of 5,000 mAh. I am not sure what’s going on there. It could be a translation issue, or it could be a series of four 5,000 mAh batteries together inside for 20,000 mAh, according to most Amazon reviews. Either way, 20,000 mAh means you can travel with this in an airplane, as it meets TSA specs.

At any rate, the listed 20,000 mAh is more than enough to charge up my Surface Pro 8, but I feel as though the power bank might hold less than 20,000 mAh total. When using the USB-C port, It took my Surface Pro 8 from about 25% to 100% one time, while powered off, leaving about 10% left in the power bank itself.

When the Surface Pro 8 is powered on, meanwhile the Baseus bank kept charging up the Surface Pro 8 under heavy web browsing. The fully charged power bank got my Pro 8 from about 25% to 80% before it died out. That’s more than enough for when you might be in a pinch, but considering Surface Pros have close to a 6,657 mAh battery, I felt as though the Baseus should be able to do more.

As for my other devices, the Baseus power bank took my iPhone 12 Pro Max from 20% to 100% and used up about 45% of its capacity. For an iPad Mini, it took 55% of the charge to go from 20% to 80%. Your mileage might vary a bit, especially if you charge more than one device at the same time.

A good buy, but there are many others

The Baseus USB-C Power Bank is a good buy if you’re looking for a solid affordable USB-C power bank for your Surface. But there are many other alternatives in the market that you can buy if you have more money to spare. The fancy design of the Baseus makes it worth 60, as well as its digital display, but these are standard features you’ll find in other products, too. Anker has a similar one, but it’s priced higher at 100. For what you’re paying, the Baseus is great.

Anker 325

Anker 737

The BEST Power Bank Baseus 65W 30000mAh SUPER FAST CHARGING

With a luxurious feel, insane charging speeds and a useful display, the Anker 737 is about as good as it gets.

If you’re looking for the best of the best, the Anker 737 might be exactly that. Not only can it deliver a staggering 140W fast charge over USB-C, but it can also be recharged at the same rate. This means that you can refill its ample 24,000 mAh capacity in less than an hour, with a compatible charger.

It’s also built exceptionally well and feels like a luxury item, with a lovely texture on the sides and a full-colour display.

Now, you might not think that you need a display on a power bank, but in practice, it comes in very handy. It’ll tell you the output on each port, the remaining charge, and how long it’ll last at the current charge rate.

Sure, it’s expensive, but considering the specifications, it’s a fairly reasonable asking price. If you’re looking to juice up one of the latest super-fast charging smartphones at full speed, this is the tool for the job.

UGREEN 145W Power Bank (25000mAh)

best, baseus, power, bank

With a massive 25,000 mAh capacity and up to 100W of output, this option from Ugreen is ready for anything.

  • 25,000 mAh capacity
  • Total output of 145W (100W45W)
  • Solid construction and minimal design

Ugreen never disappoints when it comes to build quality and aesthetics, and this is true with its 145W Power Bank, too. It has a confidence-inspiring construction with slick minimal styling that looks and feels premium. There’s a small percentage indicator that can be activated at the touch of a button, and while it’s not as comprehensive as the 737’s colour display, it tells you what you need to know at a glance.

It’s not all about looks, though, this Ugreen charger packs some serious power on the inside. It has a massive 25,000 mAh capacity, which should see you through 5.6 full charges of an iPhone 14, or 1.3 full charges of a 14-inch MacBook Pro.

It’s also exceptionally quick, able to output up to 100W on its primary USB-C output, while simultaneously delivering 45W from its second USB-C port. That means you can charge your laptop and phone at full speed at the same time. What’s more, it also supports bi-directional fast charging, so you can charge the power bank, while simultaneously charging your device from it, pretty neat!

Shargeek Storm2 Slim

If you want a power bank that makes a statement, this is the one for you.

  • The coolest-looking power bank ever
  • Incredibly detailed display and menus
  • 100W output and 20,000 mAh capacity

Quite simply, this is the most impressive-looking power bank we’ve ever come across. It has a semi-transparent chassis that allows you to look at the components inside, along with a colour display that’ll reveal all the technical details.

It’s a wonderfully geeky design, that lands somewhere between a cyberpunk aesthetic and early 2000’s nostalgia. We absolutely love it.

If you thought having a display on your power bank was overkill, strap in, because the Shargeek takes things to the next level. There’s a full menu system on this thing, allowing you to check out individual cell voltages, temperatures and more. You can even set timers to avoid wasting your charge.

Of course, none of this matters if it’s not a solid power bank, and thankfully it very much is. With a 20,000 mAh capacity and the ability to deliver 100W fast charging over USB-C, it’s ready for anything. You’ll have to be prepared to fork out some cash, though.

Excitrus 105W Power Bank Ultimate

Serious power and portability, combined with unassuming looks. This could be the sweet spot for a lot of people.

This option from Excitrus has a much more subtle design, and if you didn’t know better, you could easily mistake it for any other run-of-the-mill power bank.

On the inside, though, it’s extremely capable. It can deliver 87W from its USB-C port, while simultaneously outputting 18W over USB-A.

That’s enough power to charge a Surface Laptop 4 and a Google Pixel 6 at full speed simultaneously.

What’s more, it’s very compact and lightweight for its specification, along with being reasonably priced.

Anker 325

If you’re not overly concerned with fast charging, this option offers loads of capacity and excellent build quality at a bargain price.

If you’re not so bothered about fast charging and just want an affordable power bank that will keep you charged up for days on end, the Anker 325 is likely the one to pick.

It comes at a very affordable price but still benefits from Anker’s excellent build quality and renowned reliability.

The massive 20,000 mAh capacity is enough to charge an iPhone over four times, so it’ll keep you going for a really long time.

It’s also very slim and lightweight, for its capacity, so it won’t weigh you down too much when you’re out and about.

How we chose these power banks

We’ve tried and tested every portable charger on this list. We’ve used them in our daily lives, travelled with them abroad, and charged laptops, phones, cameras, drones and more. This means that we have first-hand experience with their reliability, speed, durability and portability.

We factor all of this in when adding a power bank to our buyer’s guide, as well as considering the value for money that each model offers. This means that you can rest assured that anything you see featured on this page has been thoroughly tested by our team, often over the course of many months, and should provide you with an excellent experience if you decide to purchase one.

How to choose a portable charger

Choosing a portable charger can feel like a monumental task, there are just so many to choose from. With such a variety of sizes, capacities, styles and specifications on the market, it’s especially hard to find the right one for you.

To help narrow down your choices, here are a couple of things we recommend thinking about before you commit to a power bank.

How much capacity do you really need?

It can be tempting to go for the largest capacity available; the more juice the better, right? Well, these high-capacity chargers also tend to be heavy and bulky, so they can be a bit of a pain to carry around with you. We recommend taking a moment to think about the situations you face that normally call for a power bank. If you’re camping out in the wilderness for days on end, then a giant capacity charger may be just what you need. but if you’re just trying to get an extra bit of battery life to see you through your commute, you’d likely be happier with a slimmer and more lightweight solution.

What do you need to charge?

While pretty much any power bank will charge your phone, laptops, in particular, are where things get more complicated. Most USB-C-powered laptops will require a high-wattage USB-C Power Delivery (PD) specification. It all depends on the laptop model, but generally speaking, for laptops, you’re likely to want 60W PD spec or above, especially if you want to charge the laptop while it is in use. Check your model’s specifications to ensure you get a power bank that’s up to the task.

If you’ll only be charging phones or tablets, then any charger will work, but be aware that not all are created equal. If you want to take advantage of fast charging then it’s worth paying attention to the specs to ensure that your device will be compatible. Samsung phones seem to be especially picky when it comes to fast charging, but so long as you cross-reference your manufacturer’s charging specifications with the power bank’s specifications, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

Best Overall: ESR HaloLock Kickstand MagSafe Battery

ESR earns our top spot overall for the HaloLock Kickstand MagSafe Battery that delivers both power and quality. In terms of charging, this battery touts a 10000mAh capacity. That’s plenty of juice to give you more than a full charge and can get you through an entire day, even in the most demanding scenarios.

One nice little feature is the metal kickstand, which is a rare find in power banks. It works well in portrait or landscape. Another is the ergonomic curve of the battery itself. Even though the battery is a little bulky, the curvature fits nicely in the palm of your hand.

Best Premium: Anker 633 MagGo 2-in-1 Charging Station

Getting the best of both worlds is usually a good thing and Anker supplies in this version of their most recent battery pack. The 633 MagGo 2-in-1 acts as both a battery pack and a charging station. Use the battery on the go, and when you are ready, just slide it into the base for charging both your phone and the bank. The base also has a Qi (pronounced “chee”) wireless charging area at the bottom of the base for your Airpods.

The battery is 5000mAh, so you can get a fairly good charge out of it. The only drawback is that many power banks offer the ability to wirelessly charge your phone while allowing for a second device to be charged through a wired connection simultaneously. This version of the MagGo does not. The 633 MagGo 2-in-1 comes in three available colors: Interstellar Gray, Dolomite White, and Misty Blue.
