This is a pretty average access point. It works mostly, as long as you have quite simple expectations. The web UI has a lot of bugs that make features unavailable for no good reason. For example, in AP mode you can’t supply your own HTTPS certificate because the section of the config is hidden. Luckily if you manually enter the correct URL then you can get it to it. I found you can’t operate a WPA2 PSK on 2.5 GHz and WPA 2 enterprise on 5 GHz, again due to a UI bug. The tech support is as unhelpful as ever, only reading about the first 10 words of the problem, asking redundant questions and just resorting to asking you to factory reset, which. view more This is a pretty average access point. Again, I worked out if you “view source” and manually add the rectory option to a drop down it will save and work, so it’s not a technical limitation. Some features don’t really work. Pinning a device to a specific node doesn’t work. Optimisation is basically useless. I thought this would improve my connection stability but it’s made it worse. My Oculus Quest 2 now randomly disconnects because it’s jumping to a node on the other side of the house, even though it’s right next to one. Connection is worse than the rubbish slingshot router. I don’t know if this is a problem typical with mesh in general, or Asus in particular. The first Asus router I bought 15 years ago was a bit of rebadged trash, and I’m not really sure things have improved. Not worth the money, buy TP-Link or netgear.

What is a VPN?

VPN is an acronym for ‘Virtual Private Network’, historically used by private organizations to seamlessly link geographically diverse locations via the Internet. A VPN ‘tunnels’ traffic between two devices by transmitting it over a secure network. There are also clearly identifiable benefits to individual Internet users accessing a VPN.

  • A VPN provides you with top-level security and privacy for all your Internet downloading, streaming and browsing. As long as you are signed into your VPN account, all data you transmit over the Internet is encrypted.
  • A VPN encrypts your device by hiding the IP address assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and replacing it with the IP address of your choosing from the list of server locations belonging to your VPN provider. This masks your identity when visiting sites that geo-restricted content, and helps you avoid devious local Internet marketing and advertising schemes that track you through your IP address.

Is a VPN Subscription included?

We offer discounted NordVPN 1 Year and ExpressVPN 1 Month Free Trial subscriptions with select FlashRouters.

For all other VPNs, you would need to sign up for one separately, directly from a provider.

Need assistance in finding a VPN Provider? Please visit our recent VPN Provider Best Seller List.

If you return your router you will be charged the full price of the Nord subscription

Can I change my IP address to on in another country?

YES! The countries that you can change your IP address to depend on the offerings of your specific VPN providers. and server locations vary across all VPN providers.

If you choose to purchase a FlashRouter then you will not have to install any VPN client software on your computer to change your IP address; the VPN will already be configured within the router. Therefore, any device you plug into this FlashRouter is automatically assigned the IP address of your selected VPN server.

Should my FlashRouter replace my old router?

A FlashRouter will work as a standalone router by connecting your modem to its Wide Area Network (WAN) port, or using it in a Dual Router Network by connecting it to your existing router through a Local Area Network (LAN)/Ethernet port. Either way a FlashRouter can be configured to tunnel all traffic through the VPN server of your choosing.

If you would like to set up your Home Network so that some devices are being tunneled through a VPN server, and others are connecting to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) within your home country, then using your FlashRouter as an auxiliary device is recommended.

A FlashRouter will not replace your modem though but can be used along side it.

Will a FlashRouter speed up my connection?

FlashRouters are relatively new models that may enhance data transfers across your home network or extend the range of your Wireless signal. However, the speed at which you download or stream content can not exceed the speed of the connection you pay for through your ISP. Purchasing a FlashRouter or signing up for VPN service WILL NOT transform your regular connection into a high-speed broadband connection.

At the same time, if you do have a broadband connection, a FlashRouter with a VPN connection may slow down your transfer speeds due to the processor encrypting all of your data. In certain cases a FlashRouter with a VPN can also prevent throttling by an ISP of specific service like Netflix or Amazon Video.

Does the service plan renew?

All FR service plans automatically renew on a quarterly or annual basis based on the term initially purchased. A reminder e-mail will be sent one week prior to renewal. In your FlashRouter account panel, you can cancel the plan at any time to stop any further renewals.

Does the service plan include a VPN subscription?

A subscription to a VPN does not come with a Service plan. We offer discounted Nord VPN 1 Year and ExpressVPN 1 Month Free Trial subscriptions with select FlashRouters.

For all other VPNs, you would need to sign up for one separately, directly from a provider.

Need assistance in finding a VPN Provider? Please visit our recent VPN Provider Best Seller List.

Does FlashRouters offer phone support?

At this time, we do not provide phone support with our service plans. We have tested phone support for networking troubleshooting in the past but have found that on average caused us to help less customers in a less efficient manner.

However, with a purchase of a yearly Silver Plan or any Gold Service Plan, customers can schedule 1-on-1 remote support sessions via Teamviewer with our engineers and they will provide a hands-on, personal solution, to any problems you may be facing.

Can I purchase a router without a plan and subscribe later?

Yes, you may purchase a service plan at any time. However, we can’t guarantee any pricing, or apply any previously offered discounts or specific features at that later date.

Do I need a Service Plan for a firmware upgrade?

Firmware upgrades are free of charge to any FlashRouter customer!

You can visit our support center and select your specific router model to upgrade your firmware based on the recommendations provided.

If you want the help of our Support Team to assist in this upgrade, you can always sign up for our yearly Silver plan or any Gold Service Plan and schedule a 1-on-1 Teamviewer session in which our trained engineers will take care of the upgrade for you!

Asus ZenWiFi XD6 Review

Designed for high-performance Wi-Fi 6, the ZenWiFi XD6 is a dual-Band Wi-Fi system with AX5400 support. It is currently available for purchase for RM1499 for the twin pack, which according to Asus has a coverage area of up to 5400 square feet.

The ZenWiFi XD6 is an excellent choice for those who want more than just strong Wi-Fi coverage from their router. Because of the high-speed AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 radio, it is capable of delivering a fast Wi-Fi connection throughout the entire coverage area, which is particularly advantageous. In reality, the total system capacity can reach up to 5400Mbps in some cases.

The ZenWiFi XD6 is distinguished by its minimalistic and contemporary design, which makes it stand out from the crowd. In spite of my preference for black on the ZenWiFi XT8, I think the white color on the ZenWiFi XD6 is also quite attractive. The fine-brushed metallic finish, as well as the golden logo, really add to the sense of luxury of this piece.

Performance

The Wi-Fi performance of the ZenWiFi XD6 is excellent, whether used individually or as part of a mesh Wi-Fi system. Because of the powerful Wi-Fi radio and extremely stable operation of each unit, each unit provides excellent coverage. As a matter of fact, I believe that Asus should sell the ZenWiFi XD6 as a standalone router, as it will be an excellent choice for those looking for an aesthetically pleasing and high-performance router.

We will test only one ZenWiFi XD6 unit at a time to determine how good the actual Wi-Fi performance of each unit is before moving on to the mesh Wi-Fi speed test. ZenWiFi XD6 units are available for purchase here.

I can easily get over 800Mbps on my iPhone 12, which supports the Wi-Fi 6 technology when I’m only a short distance away. When testing on an older device that does not have Wi-Fi 6 technology, expect a slower response time.

Despite the fact that it is only a dual-Band system, the ZenWiFi XD6 performs admirably as a mesh Wi-Fi system. The strong signal coverage provided by each unit of the ZenWiFi XD6 ensures that the network operates at a fast and reliable speed throughout the entire Wi-Fi coverage area.

When I run a speed test with my laptop connected over Wi-Fi to the mesh node, I am able to get close to 500Mbps out of my Gigabit Internet connection, which is impressive. However, I must manually select the 160Mhz mode in order to benefit from the faster speed because the system appears to prefer the 80Mhz mode by default.

The ZenWiFi XD6 uses 802.11k/v to assist devices in making roaming decisions by providing them with roaming assistance. In practice, it works flawlessly on all of my modern devices. Walking around my house, my iPhone is able to automatically switch to the faster network, which is convenient.

As a result, because AiMesh does not support 802.11r, the ZenWiFi XD6 is unable to provide fast roaming with a latency of less than 100ms. However, according to Asus, this is done on purpose in order to support the most recent and more secure Wi-Fi encryption method, WPA3, which is not compatible with 802.11r fast transition.

The Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system brings the power of Wi-Fi 6 mesh networking to a broader audience

There’s something immensely satisfying about stomping out Wi-Fi dead spots with a well-designed mesh network. Doubly so when you can supercharge wireless performance and roll out the latest security technologies at the same time. Our new Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system, launching at CES 2021, includes two dual-Band nodes that cover up to 5400 square feet of living space with data rates approaching 5400Mbps on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. It brings the Wi-Fi 6 mesh networking experience to more homes than ever before.

Enjoy wide-ranging Wi-Fi 6 performance

Thanks to the improvements in the Wi-Fi 6 protocol, we can support higher data rates across both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, leading to aggregate wireless speeds of up to 5400Mbps from the Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system.

The Wi-Fi 6 standard also incorporates features like Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and multi-user, multiple input, multiple output (MU-MIMO), which improve efficiency. The idea is to support more devices with a consistent experience, like what you’d expect from a cellular network.

Thanks to the improvements in the Wi-Fi 6 protocol, we can support higher data rates across both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, leading to aggregate wireless speeds of up to 5400Mbps from the Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system.

The idea is to support more devices with a consistent experience, like what you’d expect from a cellular network.

The Asus ZenWiFi XD6 uses OFDMA to break chunks of the frequency spectrum, called channels, into smaller resource units. Data that’s packed into these subchannels and transmitted simultaneously doesn’t incur as much overhead compared to older Wi-Fi standards, reducing latency in a meaningful way. In fact, OFDMA’s impact is so significant that it’s sometimes cited as Wi-Fi 6’s most important feature.

Each of the Asus ZenWiFi XD6’s two wireless nodes are built to sustain this performance with a 1.5GHz triple-core processor. Both nodes feature three Gigabit Ethernet ports for hard-wired devices like desktop PCs and gaming consoles, along with a fourth port that can handle WAN or LAN duties. The Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system supports both wireless and wired backhaul, and connecting the two units via Ethernet will devote all of the system’s wireless bandwidth to client traffic.

Instant Guard makes public Wi-Fi secure wherever you are

The best way to shield your online actions from prying eyes is to reach the internet through a secure connection with a server you trust. Some virtual private networks, or VPNs, are paid services. Free alternatives might sell your browsing history to third parties, hit you with ads, or throttle your speed.

We let you avoid these pitfalls with a handy way to set up your own VPN, available from your Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system at no extra charge. A new Asus app for iOS and Android called Instant Guard transfers your router’s profile with the press of a button and creates the VPN. Before you jump online, simply open Instant Guard on your mobile device and select your Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system to instantly make a secure connection.

With Instant Guard enabled, all of your communications will safely travel back and forth through your home router. And if you enable the AiProtection Pro suite, you’ll enjoy its protection against outside network threats in tandem with Instant Guard.

WPA3 and AiProtection Pro keep the whole family safe at home

Threats to your network don’t just come from the outside. You want dynamic protection for devices on your network that’s able to keep pace with the changing security landscape. The AiProtection Pro security suite bundled with our Asus ZenWiFi XD6 scans incoming and outgoing traffic to intercept common attacks, it blocks access to known malicious websites, and it detects infected devices on your network, severing their unsanctioned ties to outside servers. AiProtection Pro pulls its intelligence from Trend Micro’s database, which is regularly refreshed to keep the protection current.

Integrated parental controls keep your family safe without the burden of a monthly subscription. Right out of the box you can apply age-based profiles that restricts access to certain services. Kids under 12, for example, are blocked from social media, while teenagers are kept away from gambling sites. A more granular content filter lets you tailor those settings to taste.

Connecting to the Asus ZenWiFi XD6 with a Wi-Fi 6-capable smartphone or laptop gets you stronger security from Wi-Fi Protected Access 3—the latest protocol designed to keep unauthorized users from gaining access to your network.

The Asus ZenWiFi XD6 supports easy setup with the Asus Router app for iOS and Android. Simply unbox the pre-paired units, plug them into power at their locations, and fire up the app to finish setup in just a few quick steps.

Live life in the fast lane with our Asus ZenWiFi XD6

Our new Asus ZenWiFi XD6 was designed to deliver a consistent wireless networking experience with Wi-Fi 6, regardless of how many devices you attach. We precisely engineered each node’s housing, carefully laying out six antennas, plenty of Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a triple-core CPU. Between its 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands, the Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system is rated for almost 5400 Mbps of aggregate speed across up to 5400 square feet of coverage.

It wasn’t enough for us to build great hardware, though. We also protect your home network with the free AiProtection Pro security suite and its perpetual updates. Our Asus Router app gives you access to all of the Asus ZenWiFi XD6’s settings from your mobile device. And the Instant Guard app simplifies the VPN setup process so anyone can have their own encrypted connection on iOS or Android devices. Thanks to its strong performance and extensive security features, the Asus ZenWiFi XD6 system is an ideal midrange mesh networking partner.
