Alcatel 7 review

As phones continue to get better, we’re seeing some compelling options at the cheaper end of the market. Companies like Motorola have made a statement by producing very nice devices that can be had for the price of a nice steak dinner with the family.

Alcatel, much like Motorola, has plenty of experience making “cheap” but good devices. We’re now getting our first look at its newest “flagship” device the Alcatel 7. This isn’t a flagship in the normal sense, but it is the best and most expensive phone Alcatel released in 2018.

Alcatel sent over its Alcatel 7 for us to take a look at; we’ve used the device as a daily driver for the last few weeks. During this time, we’ve been using it on the MetroPCS network since the 7 is a Metro-exclusive device. You can walk into a store right now and pick one up for under 200.

Hardware

The Alcatel 7 is a bit of a trip down memory lane. While many companies work to put as many so-called premium materials in their devices today, the 7 doesn’t feature any. We’re reminded of the shiny plastic Samsung Galaxy S4 when we pick the device up.

The smooth plastic back is definitely a throwback and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Sure, some will overlook the device for not featuring enough glass, but others will appreciate how durable this makes the device. We’ve seen enough of our share of problems with glass-backed phones to make us appreciate that this one can survive a fall.

One of the biggest issues we’ve had with the Alcatel 7 related directly to that plastic back. This thing is incredibly slippery. We have seen some devices that are worse in this respect (the Samsung Galaxy S6 comes to mind), but you will definitely want to grab a case for this phone if you want to avoid is slipping onto the floor. It didn’t really matter where this phone sat, it was always trying to slide.

The back of the device is dotted by a fingerprint scanner just below a dual camera sensor. The scanner is rougher than we’ve seen in other devices and threw us for a bit of a loop. It’s something we got used to eventually, but we never did get used to how painfully slow it is. After using Pixel and Huawei devices with lightning-quick scanners, this one felt like we were puttering along in the slow lane.

The camera, which we’ll touch on more in a little bit, is a dual 12 MP f/2.2 2 MP f/2.4 affair. It can record up to 1080p video at 30 fps, but that’s about it. It is flanked by a dual LED flash that does a pretty respectable job of lighting up a room. We’ve definitely seen worse.

Around front, things get a little more interesting. We’re treated to a 6-inch, 1080p display. The display follows the popular new 18:9 display ratio we’ve seen on phones for the last 18 months or so. We were really surprised at what a really nice display the Alcatel 7 has.

For this generation of devices, Alcatel went with its own in-house displays to cut down on some costs and it was a great move. Sure, you’re not going to be blown away like you would be on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (a phone 5x its price!), but considering this is a 180 device, we were impressed.

Colors look fantastic and pop right off the screen. Where some cheaper displays appear to have the display far below the digitizer, images felt forward and right in front of our eyes with the Alcatel 7. The only time we could really tell we were looking at a budget panel was some slight color shifting when looking at the device off-axis. Though that being said, the phone does get very bright outdoors and is very usable on all but the brightest of days. Low light scenarios were a bit different. We wish the display was able to get a little bit darker so it was a little easier to use late at night or first thing in the morning.

Above the display sits your normal selection of sensors and the front-facing camera. We really enjoyed front-facing flash for selfies, something that is bound to be a popular feature with younger individuals looking for a solid phone. Just beware, this thing gets BRIGHT and will leave you blinking for a few minutes after. Still, it’s a nice touch.

Another nice feature we’re seeing in more devices is fantastic buttons. The Alcatel 7 has wonderfully clicky buttons and a textured power button. Nothing ruins an experience quicker than mushy buttons that you have to think about when pressing. Alcatel’s choice of buttons here is great. They’re tactile, have great travel, and almost no wiggle. Sure, this might be a small thing, but its this attention to detail we really appreciate.

The top of the device hides an IR blaster that you’d be forgiven for forgetting about. It was trendy to stick these devices back in the HTC One M7 days, but that quickly died out. We love to see Alcatel keeping the idea alive here. It’s convenient to grab our phone, open up an app and have control over our cable box, television, or window-mounted air conditioning unit.

The opposite end of the device holds the USB type-C port and a speaker. We weren’t blown away by the sound quality of the speaker, but it was fine for a speaker call in a moderately loud situation. You aren’t going to stun anyone with how awesome music sounds coming out of this thing, but it’ll get the job.

And speaking of music coming out of this thing– yes– it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack!

Software

Cheaper Android devices are a mixed bag in terms of software. We see some like Nokia embracing stock Android. But, equally as often, we see others like Blu put really ridiculous skins on the phone.

Alcatel tries to walk a fine line here and does a pretty decent job.

After you get through the initial setup, you’re greeted by a launcher and icons that will make you roll your eyes. But, upon further inspection, there’s a lot to like here. Yes, the Joy Launcher is terrible and the icons are laughably bad but those are easily replaced. And hey, at least the Google pane is to the left of the homescreen, something we’d like to see more often.

The rest of the device is left unmolested by customization by Alcatel. Notifications, settings, and other important system apps look just like they would on your Pixel device. There are some added settings like Face Unlock (which I was never able to get to work despite repeated efforts), but you’ll feel at home here if you’ve ever owned a Nexus or Pixel device.

Where Alcatel and Metro go wrong is the apps it has included with the system. We’ve seen devices that have included more, but this definitely on the high side. The phone is loaded down with apps like Metro’s own “App Store”, MetroZONE, Lookout, Device Unlock, Hotspot, Name ID, myMetro, and more.

Metro PCS’ App Store application is nothing more than an advertisement. The app gives users links to suggested and promoted applications and does nothing more than link to the Play Store listings for these apps. It’s like Metro asked “How can we make some money?” and came up with this. It’s terrible and shouldn’t exist in the first place.

Another pretty terrible inclusion is the MetroZone app. The app aims to be a one-stop shop for all of your local news, movie times, events, gas and more.

I wish I had never opened this app.

The Alcatel 7 unit we have for review is now taken over by advertisements because of the MetroZone app. Every time we open up the device, we see an ad. They appear full screen until you close them, which doesn’t sound like a big deal until you quickly need to get some info from your device. It feels like I’m using Internet Explorer in 2007 without a popup blocker.

I think what honestly bugs me the most is this app doesn’t give me any information I didn’t already have access to. Weather applications are extremely popular. So are apps for gas and movie times. And then there are the sponsored blog posts it tries to get you to click on….

One addition that we did like is Alcatel’s Smart Manager. This app allows you to keep an eye on which apps are opening on startup and which apps are deep in hibernation. I’m not sure how useful it will be to most people but giving users more control over their devices is never a bad thing.

We also appreciated the power saving modes included. Most Android OEMs include some kind of lower power mode, but the Alcatel 7 has two. We have our normal power saving mode that kicks on when your battery gets low and limits background activity, throttles down your processor speed, and dims the screen.

Then we have an even more powerful mode that turns the wallpaper black, limits which apps can be launched and is designed to get the absolute most out of your device.

We love this restrictive power saving mode, but there seems to be a problem with its implementation on the Alcatel 7. Our unit constantly reloaded the power saving mode and therefore wouldn’t let us access anything. It took a full power cycle get out of the mode and we came away with a bit of a bad taste in our mouth. If we had been in an emergency situation with a dwindling battery, this could make the difference between getting help and not.

There are a ton of little quirks with the Alcatel 7’s software, but at its core, it sticks pretty close to stock. If you replace the launcher and disable some of the built-in apps, you could probably enjoy your time with the Alcatel 7 a little bit more than we did.

Performance

The Alcatel 7 is a budget device through and through. It features a MediaTek Helio P23 SoC clocked at 2.5GHz. The octa-core chip is not the fastest or most powerful out there and it shows in the day-to-day performance of the Alcatel 7.

We found tasks like opening apps or scrolling through lists frustrating. There is lag in almost all areas of the device. The system routinely drops frames during animations which leads to stuttering and a choppy feel. Android is heavily dependant on the device being able to render graphics and animation smoothly for an overall pleasing software experience and the Helio P23 really falls flat here.

But, it’s not all bad news. The Alcatel 7 reminds us a lot of that older car that takes a few cranks to get going, but once it does, is completely fine. We saw a ton of dropped frames and sluggish behavior after waking the phone up from a deep sleep, but once we used the device for more than a minute or so, we were good to go. Scrolling through Reddit or browsing Instagram was completely fine. It’s a weird issue, but one we were able to reliably produce.

Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t stop there. The phone isn’t properly able to support the camera app because of how much lag is in the system. Remember the front-facing flash we mentioned? Well, almost every selfie we tried to snap with the flash enabled failed. The flash would light up, go dim again and we’d still be waiting on the camera shutter.

It is ridiculous for a phone in 2018 to behave like this. If Alcatel’s key demographic for this device is younger individuals looking for an inexpensive phone, it is really shooting itself in the foot with this terrible experience. I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but people like to take pictures of themselves and their friends with the front-facing camera and they don’t like to be embarrassed by terrible phone performance.

The Alcatel 7 features just 2 GB of RAM and this initially gave us pause going into this review. We routinely review devices with double or triple that amount of RAM and we were interested to see how full-fledged Android would perform with just 2 GB of RAM.

We have to say that we were pleasantly surprised. There were definitely apps that got pushed out of memory before they would on other devices with more RAM, but we never encountered an app being killed while used. We were also surprised to pick up the phone after a while and find some of our social media apps still in memory. Games are another story and die almost immediately, but that is to be expected.

If performance is somewhat disappointing, then battery life is the standout. The Alcatel 7 features a 4,000 mAh battery and supports quick charging. We were able to get well over a day’s worth of use with 40% to 50% of our battery left at the end of the day. The large battery capacity coupled with a weak processor and average display resolution really lended to some fantastic battery life. If you’re a regular user, we could easily see two days of battery life here.

Camera

Most people aren’t going to expect a camera experience that rivals a Samsung flagship on a 180 device. And they’d be right to temper their expectations.

The 12 MP 2 MP main camera is nothing to write home about. Dynamic range is weak, auto-FOCUS can be hit or miss and we see a lot of colors that are misrepresented. Not only that, pictures with bright light sources routinely look blown out, destroying many lovely outside shots.

Is it possible to take a good picture with the Alcatel 7? Sure. But, you’re going to have to adjust with the included Pro mode, and even then, we’d suggest just sticking them on social media. If you’re looking to pick this device up for your kid as their first device, you probably aren’t going to hear much complaining. But, if you’re used to higher end devices, you will probably be frustrated here.

Conclusion

During our review period, I asked several people for their thoughts on the Alcatel 7. Almost universally, people thought the device felt pretty cheap. On its face, that’s not a great sign. But, when I asked those same people how much they thought the device would retail, I didn’t get any answers under 300. Sure, it might not feel premium, but Alcatel isn’t asking for a premium price either.

One area where the 7 shows its value is the display. We really can’t say enough how impressed we were with the panel on this device. We’ve seen devices that cost two to three times more with inferior displays. Since we spend our entire lives looking at screens now, it makes sense to pick a phone with a quality display and the Alcatel 7 won’t disappoint.

Unfortunately, the Alcatel 7 disappoints in enough areas that we’d suggest holding off if you’re used to the flagship lifestyle. The MediaTek processor in the Alcatel 7 just isn’t good enough to get the job done. We found the experience of using this phone very frustrating due to slowdowns and lag.

We’re also disappointed in the apps Metro and Alcatel loaded on the device. Some are pointless while some almost feel malicious like MetroZone. Sure, there aren’t a ton of these apps (and far less than you’d expect to see on a Samsung flagship), but they’re just plain bad. If you do decide to pick this phone up, I’d avoid these at all cost. Uninstall or disable where you can.

But these trade-offs aren’t enough to avoid this phone. There are few devices in a carrier store that carry a price tag under 200 and that makes the Alcatel 7 very attractive. If you’re picking this up for your kid or perhaps an older family member that needs a first smartphone, they’ll probably be fine with this.

Alcatel has a long history of making quality devices and they’ve done so here again. The Alcatel 7 certainly isn’t perfect, but it gets the job done.

Alcatel is bringing at least three new smartphones to MWC, but here’s a sneak peek

Alcatel is bringing at least three new phone lines to Mobile World Congress in February, but it’s teasing the products at CES to gauge interest and set the stage for a resurgence in the brand throughout 2018.

TCL Communications, which owns both the Alcatel brands and BlackBerry Mobile, was quiet on the Alcatel front in 2017 as it focused on pushing the KEYone, but according to Christian Gatti, global president of Alcatel’s phone business, the brand is poised for a comeback of sorts this year.

To that end, Alcatel is debuting three phones at CES 2018 this week, one from each of its three new product lineups: the Alcatel 5, Alcatel 3V, and Alcatel 1X. While they vary in terms of size, build quality, and performance (most of which we don’t know yet) they all have 18:9 aspect ratio screens. Let’s take a quick look at each one:

This is the affordable flagship of the lot with an interesting squared-off design. While we don’t know pricing at this point, Alcatel is committing to a sub-300 price for the phone, which would put it in good company with many of the mid-range devices released late last year.

It lacks the dual rear camera setup of the Alcatel 3V (and it’s actually quite a bit smaller, too) it does feature a dual front-facing camera setup, one wide-angle and one regular, along with a rear fingerprint sensor. To align with its flagship status, Alcatel is outfitting the phone with a USB-C port on the bottom, and will offer a face unlock feature using the front-facing camera.

Alcatel 3V

Larger and more imposing, with a glass back and two rear cameras, the 3V is Alcatel’s sub-200 device for 2017, but it feels far more expensive.

It also has slimmer bezels above and below the LCD display than the Alcatel 5. It also has a rear fingerprint sensor and a more rounded design, which makes it comfortable to hold in the hand despite its imposing size. It will also have a Micro-USB port.

Alcatel 1X

The sub-100 device of the lot, this one is really interesting. It has a lovely felt-like texture on the back, along with a fingerprint sensor and a single camera. It has a Micro-USB port and, interestingly, will use its front-facing camera to support face unlock.

That’s all we know about Alcatel’s 2018 lineup right now, but what’s interesting is how confident the company appears to be about its offering. Of course, things are always subject to change, and Alcatel already contends with a saturated market that is getting better year after year. It’s not clear how these phones will fare in the U.S., but around the world, Alcatel is a trusted brand with enormous carrier penetration.

60% Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra ReviewSource: Tech2.in.com Archive.org versionThe One Touch Idol Ultra had all the makings of a very good handset, but the minor issues and niggles stop it from achieving its goal. Apart from the good looks and build quality, there’s nothing else that really stands out. The display produces good colours, but the sensitivity of the screen should have been better. This issue creeps up when using the phone or even typing. The lack of a standard headphone jack is also a deal breaker. Finally, given the price, we expect GLONASS, the ability to do 1080p and a scratch resistant glass as standard. The handset could have used a more powerful dual-core chipset, if not a quad-core. 100% Alcatel One Touch Idol S reviewSource: Expert Reviews Archive.org versionThe Alcatel One Touch Idol S is a seriously impressive phone for the price. It’s a shame there’s not more storage space, but its excellent battery life and Smart design make it a joy to use. It’s very hard to choose between this handset and the Moto G. The G is very slightly faster and has 8GB of internal storage, but there’s no microSD card slot, while the Idol S has stingy internal memory but expandable storage, and is available on a £19-per-month 4G contract from EE. The One Touch Idol S’s slimline proportions and 4G connectivity just push the G into second place, though. it’s our new budget Champion and a Best Buy. Alcatel One Touch Idol X

The Alcatel One Touch Idol X was released in the second quarter of 2014 and it featured an Android OS, v4.2.1 (Jelly Bean), which could be upgraded to the latest KitKat v4.4.4. The smartphone is powered by an 2 GHz Cortex A7 octa core processor and a GPU chip that handles the display needs of the phone. This phone has an option of 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage while purchasing. The 5 edge to edge touch screen display is capable of a high resolution (1080p). The phone is thin and light at a mere 8.1 mm and 130g, which is suitable for one-handed use. The metal trim around the body gives it a luxurious look while the back cover is a polycarbonate. There is a 13.1 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and a secondary 2 MP camera capable of recording at [email protected]. The Idol X comes with a pair of JBL stereo headsets, which promises enhanced audio quality named Hi-Fi. There are two color options available, which is black and white. The 2500 mAh Lithium battery promises up to 27 hours of talk time on 2G and standby up to 440 hours on 2G. Lastly, the downside of this smartphone is that it does not support the LTE or 4G network.

Alcatel One Touch Idol Mini

The Alcatel One Touch Idol Mini might fit easily in the hand but it is big on style and features. There a four colors to choose from; cranberry pink, metallic red, slate and silver. Made to look premium and classy, the metallic brushed finish and color combinations will certainly individualize the device to its owner. There are 2 variants of the Alcatel One Touch Idol Mini; a single SIM and a dual SIM version.

The display on the smartphone is a 4.3 inches FWVGA IPS panel that delivers good quality images. The Android 4.2 Jelly Bean device comes with a dual core 1.3 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and either 8 GB or 4 GB internal storage depending on the version. The limited internal storage can be expanded up to 32 GB using a MicroSD card. The image capture capability is rather good with its rear 5 MP auto FOCUS camera and the device also includes a front facing VGA camera.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol Mini reviewSource: Lint Archive.org versionThe Alcatel OneTouch Idol Mini does a good job of disguising its budget asking price by delivering a slim, good-looking smartphone package. It’s the look that’s among the phone’s strongest traits. In that respect the Idol Mini ticks a box and for £80 it’s hard to complain. But the sheer strength of the Moto E and the EE Kestrel’s 4G connectivity see the Idol Mini fall a step behind where it could be, with all eyes falling on its follow-up due in the coming months. Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha

A stylish little package with attention to details; the Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha is an eye catching phone with capable hardware specifications. The unique design of the device is very refreshing with beautiful corner curves and a full metal construction. At the top of the device is a transparent section that lights up to truly alert users to notifications while the back, home and menu keys are placed almost to the edge on the bottom panel. This coupled with the floating screen illusion gives the Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha a distinct look over the competition. The device features a 4.7 inch HD TFT, Black crystal touch panel with IPS technology. The display quality is impressive with good contrast and colors. The Android Jelly Bean smartphone comes with a quad core Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, PowerVR SGX544 GPU and 16 GB device storage. The Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha features a 13 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front-facing secondary sensor. Other features include Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, FM radio with RDS and a few preinstalled games. The battery life is good with a 200 mAh Lithium cell powering the device. Users have the option to choose colors and finishes; slate, soft gold/matte, soft gold/ brushed and pink gold/brushed.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 5.5 inch

Many people often wonder what became of the successful 90s phone producer Alcatel as users have heard very little of them after the early 2000s. Now however, Alcatel seems to be making a comeback and the One Touch Idol 3 has been hailed as a very affordable mid-range phone that looks good and functions with a solid performance. The phone feature a 5.5” LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 401 ppi. The resolution is pretty standard for a phone this size which is only 0.3 inches or 7.4 mm thick, and weighs a mere 142 grams. The design is elegant and stylishly slim with rounded edges and a grayish brushed color with chrome highlights. There is a 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front facing camera. Although good for daylight and natural light photography, the cameras tend to have trouble focusing in low light settings. The hardware here includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz Cortex A-53 quad core processor, an Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB RAM. Users can choose whether they want 16 GB or 32 GB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 128 GB. It comes with an Android Lollipop OS but some have said that the customized user interface can be a bit confusing, since it is Alcatel’s own design. Apart from that, it should strike users a very economical but practical option.

80% Review: Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 (5.5in)Source: PC Authority Archive.org versionIt’s hard not to like the Idol 3 – it gets so many things right for a phone that’s 379. Great screen, smooth performance and a relatively uncluttered Android interface. Compared to the competition in the same price range, nothing comes close except the Motorola Moto G. If you can live with a poor low light camera and few of Alcatel’s apps lingering around, the Idol 3 is a great alternative compared to some much more expensive smartphones. 80% Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 Smartphone ReviewSource: Tom’s Guide Archive.org versionThe Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 is one of the best smartphone deals yet. For just 250, you get a very bright display, superb speakers and an all-day battery in a sexy frame. The front and back cameras also performed well, though you’ll definitely want to use the flash in low light. Among midrange unlocked phones, the Asus Zenfone 2 delivers faster performance for about 50 more, and the latest Moto G has a customizable design and better camera starting at just 180, but its performance is weaker than the Alcatel. Overall, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a great value. Single Review, online available, Medium, Date: 09/24/2015Rating: Total score: 80%

Alcatel Idol 3: Holding its own with a pretty decent 5.5 inchesSource: Reg Hardware Archive.org versionIf you are in the market for a skinny phablet with a decent pair of speakers then the Idol 3 5.5 has a lot to recommend it. Light and compact and with an above-average display, it makes an excellent media player. A bit like a half-price HTC One M9. The only real drawbacks are the fixed battery – hardly an uncommon failing these days – and the rather questionable positioning of the power and volume buttons. I’m not sure the whole “100 per cent reversible” is such a big deal, but maybe I’m just missing the point. Single Review, online available, Medium, Date: 09/22/2015

88% Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 5.5 – ReviewSource: Cool Smartphone Archive.org versionI have been very impressed with the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5″. I think the package that you get for the money spent is awesome, and if you are looking for a mid-tier handset at a fraction of the cost of some of the bigger more expensive players, then it is hard to over look this device. Competitors do include the Xperia M4 Aqua, but that has got a smaller screen and all importantly, much less in the way of usable memory which limits its real world use. Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3Source: Gadgetspeak Archive.org versionMotorola certainly opened a Pandora style box with the release of its Moto G smartphone. As a result other companies are now developing handsets that combine reasonable specifications with a price point that does not cause you to catch your breath or feel a pinch on your wallet. 80% Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 reviewSource: PC Pro Archive.org versionWhen is a flagship smartphone not a flagship? When the vendor is Alcatel – at the moment. The Idol 3 looks the part, and largely acts the part, but performance is more choppy than you’d expect in a top-of-the-range smartphone. Still, Alcatel’s phones are getting better, and the company seems to be progressively addressing our criticisms with each iteration. For just £200 SIM-free, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a phone you can be extremely happy with. However, we’re banking on the next version to be the handset that gets our solid, full-throated recommendation. Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5) review – slim and elegant Full HD phablet at a reasonable priceSource: Laptop Media Archive.org versionEven now that we’re done testing Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5), we think the device is one of the better phablet models out there. The overheating due to heavy load is definitely a minus, but on the other hand, everything else seems fine. Especially as far as software is concerned, where in addition to some interesting options, we found dozens of pre-installed apps. We are impressed with the design as well. A thickness of only 7.4 mm and weight of 141 grams are values comparable to 5-inch smartphones. We can’t complain about the computational and graphics performance either – we enjoyed smooth gameplay. The camera met our expectations, providing relatively detailed photos with accurate colors and many settings. Single Review, online available, Medium, Date: 08/06/2015

The only other new Windows phone on the market, the HP Elite x3, is a powerful device, but it’s big, expensive, and primarily geared toward enterprise users rather than everyday consumers. In the Android world, the best alternative is the unlocked, Editors’ Choice-winning ZTE Axon 7, which gets you a metal unibody build, a higher-resolution display, and a far more comprehensive selection of apps, including the all-important Google services. 70% Review: The Alcatel Idol 4S launches Windows phones into the VR generationSource: PC World Archive.org versionYour consumers Windows phone choices boil down to two: the Microsoft Lumia 950 or the Alcatel Idol 4S. The Lumia 950’s superior camera offers a significant edge. I’ll back any phone that delivers outstanding battery life, however, and the Idol 4S’s silky-smooth performance complements this feature perfectly. As for VR? Without compelling content, it’s gimmicky, but what little there is, is implemented well. Single Review, online available, Short, Date: 11/10/2016Rating: Total score: 70%

76% Alcatel IDOL 4S with Windows 10 VR ReviewSource: now Archive.org versionThe Alcatel IDOL 4S is a gorgeous device. It’s thin, shiny, and fast. It’s the first to add mobile virtual reality support to the platform too! Unfortunately, at least at this time, it feels like Microsoft is really holding Alcatel back with their poorly made Universal Windows Platform apps on Windows 10 Mobile. If they can get their act together and make their own universal apps work properly on their own platforms while at the same time adding a compelling Windows Holographic/VR shell to Windows 10 Mobile… then we could have something really special in the Alcatel IDOL 4S. Windows fans and budding holographic/VR developers would jump on a device like this since it’s so much more inexpensive than the high-end HoloLens. Alcatel Idol 4S review: A flagship phone in mid-range clothesSource: Talk Android Archive.org versionI think Alcatel really missed the mark with the Idol 4S. There were a few button placement complaints, which are very minor. It had a lot going for it — the screen, the snappiness and even the software. As unfortunate as it is, the camera is really what makes or breaks a phone. If you don’t have a good camera, no one is going to buy it. And that’s where I feel Alcatel has really missed the mark. If it did have a good camera, Alcatel could have had a high-end device that could easily compete with the likes of the Galaxy S7, even without the flagship level specs on paper. Alcatel IDOL 4S [Review]Source: G Style Magazine Archive.org versionI like where Alcatel has come from and how they have tried to fit into the affordable mid-tier market. The IDOL 4S gives you just about everything you could want in a smartphone from a bright vibrant display to dual facing speakers to throwing in a VR headset. 60% Alcatel Idol 4S reviewSource: Trusted Reviews Archive.org versionThe Alcatel Idol 4S is a well-built phone that offers reasonable performance and solid battery life. However, with pricing starting at 400 (£300) it’s a little overpriced. The OnePlus 3 is only £30 more and comes with better components. I’m also not sold on the VR headset that comes bundled with it. Review: Alcatel Idol 4SSource: Ausdroid Archive.org versionThe Alcatel Idol 4S is a mid-range phone with a premium design and build. The specs of the phone are mid-range only but the attractiveness and wow factor it holds when in the hand mean it could easily pass for a premium device. The usability is great thanks to minimal interference by Alcatel in the experience and the performance is above par for a mid-range phone. The battery life is average for a mid-range device. Lower specs always drain the battery less than high end specs and thus I could easily get a full day out of this phone with heavy use. The camera is good but not great and Alcatel have done a good job customising the app. Single Review, online available, Medium, Date: 08/28/2016

70% Alcatel Idol 4SSource: PC Mag Archive.org versionThe Alcatel Idol 4S is a sleek Android phone with a beautiful display and lots of useful accessories for the price. At 400, it’s a relatively affordable way to get into VR, especially compared with buying a Gear VR and a pricey Samsung phone to go with it. But you will be making some compromises. You can’t push the phone as hard as the OnePlus 3 when it comes to high-end gaming, and it doesn’t have the same camera performance and minimally altered UI you get with a OnePlus phone. 80% A Stellar Phone with a VR TwistSource: Tom’s Guide Archive.org versionGood battery life, booming speakers and a lush screen — all in an attractive design — alone would make the 399 Alcatel Idol 4S a strong unlocked phone deal. But on top of that, you get a VR headset bundled with the phone. Although Alcatel’s included VR headset isn’t as good as the Samsung Gear VR, it’s still a nice add-on that makes this phone an even better value. Plus, it comes with a phone case and a screen protector. The OnePlus 3, also 399, offers better performance, but it has a lower-resolution display and doesn’t last as long on a charge. When you put it all together, Alcatel’s Idol 4S is a worthy option and one of the best unlocked phones on the market. 80% Alcatel Idol 4S reviewSource: Stuff TV Archive.org versionThat screen is gorgeous, the speakers are so insanely loud you don’t need Bluetooth to get the party started, and even though it doesn’t have the fastest CPU around, it still makes Android feel snappy. VR is a nice little bonus, even if it can’t quite keep the frame rates high enough for the latest games. We’re not ready to call it a sleeper hit just yet, but don’t be surprised if it ends up shifting huge numbers. and not just in Alcatel’s native France. Maybe this time next year we’ll be proclaiming its successor the heir to the OnePlus 3’s throne. Single Review, online available, Medium, Date: 07/20/2016Rating: Total score: 80%

Comment

The former French manufacturer of telecommunication equipment merged to Alcatel-Lucent in 2006. Several business segments were sold to other companies, so the Alcatel brand is now used by various companies. The Chinese company TCL uses the brand names Alcatel One Touch and Alcatel Idol for smartphones and tablets.

The market share in the smartphone tablet segment is very small, but there are quite some recent reviews in different languages. The ratings are average (as of 2016).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

PowerVR SGX544: OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible with 4 pixel and 2 vertex shaders

ARM Mali-450 MP4: OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for ARM based SoCs with 4 fragment processors and 1 vertex processor.

ARM Mali-400 MP: OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics card for ARM SoCs that is scaleable from one to four fragment processors and has got one vertex processor. Mainly used in conjunction with ARM A9 cores in tablets and smartphones.

Qualcomm Adreno 306: Integrated mid-range graphics card in the Snapdragon 410 SoCs that supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and features unified shaders.

Qualcomm Adreno 304: Integrated mid-range graphics card in the Snapdragon 210 SoCs that supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and features unified shaders.

ARM Mali-400 MP2: OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for ARM based SoCs with 2 fragment processors and 1 vertex processor.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Qualcomm Adreno 405: Integrated graphics card for ARM based SoCs. Depending on the used SoC the clock rate is around 500 MHz and features 48 unified shaders.

Qualcomm Adreno 510: Integrated graphics card based on the Adreno 500 architecture, like the Adreno 520 in the Snapdragon 820. Performance should be on average similar to the old Adreno 330 in the Snapdragon 801. Supports DirectX12, OpenCL 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.1 AE.

ARM Mali-T860 MP2: Dual-Core version of the Mali-T860 graphics card from ARM for mostly Android based smartphones and tablets. E.g. in the Mediatek Helio P10 clocked at 700 MHz and produced in 28nm.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Low-end dual-core SoC for smartphones and tablets.

Quad-core Cortex-A7-based SoC for tablets and smartphones.

ARM Cortex-A7 Octa-Core Soc for smartphones and tablets.

Dual-Core Cortex-A7 SoC with an integrated ARM Mali-400 GPU.

MT8127: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 SoC clocked at 1.7 GHz that integrates a single channel 32 Bit DDR3-1333 memory controller and a Mali-450 MP4 GPU.

Helio P10 MT6755: ARM-based octa core SoC (8x Cortex-A53) with 64 Bit support and a clock rate of up to 2 GHz per core.

Mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU cores (Cortex-A53, 64-bit capable) and an Adreno 405 GPU. Manufactured in a 28 nm LP process.

410 MSM8916: 64-Bit Cortex-A53 Quad-Core with an Adreno 306 GPU manufactured in 28nm

652 MSM8976: Upper middle class ARM based SoC with 8 CPU cores (64 Bit Cortex A72 and A53 mixture) and a Adreno 510 GPU.

617 MSM8952: Mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU cores (Cortex-A53, 64-bit capable) and an Adreno 405 GPU. Manufactured in a 28 nm LP process.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 200:

210 MSM8909: Entry-level SoC with four ARM Cortex-A7 cores at max. 1.1 GHz. Furthermore, it features an integrated Cat 4 LTE Modem and 1080p video de- and encoding.

SC7731: Entry level smartphone SoC with a ARM Mali-400 MP2 and wireless radios (up to HSPA).

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

This is a typical smartphone diagonal.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Only few smartphones are more lightweight than this.

Mainly, bigger-sized tablets and convertibles weigh as much.

78.43%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review: The best budget phone of 2015

Alcatel OneTouch has been creating some pretty nice budget handsets recently, and after seeing their new Idol 3 at MWC, I knew I had to give it a try. So I took the SIM card out of my Nexus 6 and fully switched over to the Idol 3 for the last week. I put it through its paces to see just what this budget smartphone could handle.

[alert color=”green”]The unit I used to conduct this review was running on pre-release software. Please keep in mind that any problems I faced may be fixed by the phone’s release or by a future software update.[/alert] [spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-Android”]

Design

The first thing that I noticed about the Idol 3 was that it looked pretty nice for a 250 phone. Sure, there was no metal chassis or leather back, but the phone felt extremely solid. It did not bend or creak and the build quality was great. The chrome accents along the top and bottom on the edge of the phone give it a little something so that it stands out against the crowd of black slate phones. Since they are plastic, they might pick up some scratches and dings, but I have not seen any on my unit so far. Also, the back is made of a brushed plastic that looks more premium and feels better than normal glossy plastic.

One of my favorite design features on the Idol 3 is the recessed front facing speakers on the top and bottom of the phone. This helps to break up the otherwise flat device and give it some dimension.

On the right side at the very top of the phone is the volume rocker. Interestingly, the power button is at the very top of the left side. This placement is extremely inconvenient for me, but thankfully the phone features double-tap to wake and sleep so the power button did not need to be used much. The SIM card slot is placed under the power button, and removing it you will also find a place for a Micro-SD card. If the 16GB of storage is not enough for you, it supports Micro-SD cards up to 128GB.

One on the most notable things about the Idol 3’s look is that it is perfectly symmetrical. If you turned the phone completely upside down, you would almost have no idea if it wasn’t for the front-facing camera switching places. Also, the Idol 3 only weighs in at 140 grams, which makes this phone feel extremely light. This helps with their Reversible UI feature that I will get to soon. For 250, you are getting a well made device that feels and looks great.

Display

The Idol 3 comes with a 5.5″ full-HD display at a pixel density of 401 ppi. Alcatel touts that this display is enhanced by Technicolor and the colors are supposed to appear more real. I have to say that this screen was enjoyable to look at. Everything looked amazing on the display and colors looked great. I was not expecting a display this nice on a 250 phone, and I am glad Alcatel proved me wrong.

This is one of the brightest phone displays I have ever used. I ended up keeping the brightness around 25-30% and it was plenty bright for me. You will definitely have no trouble viewing this screen in direct sunlight.

The Idol 3 uses an IPS display, and even though I prefer AMOLED, I like the way this screen looks. Blacks looks dark, whites were bright, and colors were natural without being overpowering. Also, viewing angles are amazing. Even at extreme angles, I saw no lack of detail or color.

Android and UI

If you could not tell from the fact I own a Nexus 6, I love stock Android. When I first powered on the Idol 3, I was worried because what I saw looked like a pretty heavily skinned version of Android. Thankfully, I was completely wrong. The Idol 3 is running on Android 5.0.2, and while it may not look extremely stock, few things are actually changed.

Alcatel OneTouch skinned the icons and replaced some of the stock apps, but most of Android was left completely untouched. And the apps that were replaced performed just as well as stock Google apps. Since the tweaks were light, the Idol 3 is able to run Android Lollipop very well. There are also a few software tweaks that actually added to the experience. Double-tap to sleep and wake is a welcome addition because of that terrible power button placement. It works extremely well, and I rarely found myself having to double-tap more than once.

My favorite change is the Reversible UI feature. What this features does is orient the UI to whatever direction you are holding the phone. It allows the screen to rotate completely around so you are never actually holding the phone upside down. I thought this was the biggest gimmick until I actually tried it.

As it turns out I tend to take my phone out of my pocked upside down about half of the time, but I never noticed it on the Idol 3. I would just double-tap the screen and Android would be rotated around. Since there is a speaker and microphone at both ends of the device, you can answer phone calls with the device upside down, too. Also, the animation that happens with you flip the phone around is pretty sweet. The Reversible UI is a feature that I hope other OEMs include on their phones in the future.

Camera

The Idol 3 comes with a 13 MP main camera with a Sony sensor and an 8 MP front-facing camera. The camera software has most of the features a normal user is looking for plus some extras. There is an HDR mode, a panorama mode, a manual mode, a time-lapse mode, a bar-code scanner, and one called “Face beauty” which basically smooths out your skin and may make selfies look a little better.

The phone took pictures extremely fast, with close to no shutter lag. Of course, the real test of a phone’s camera is the kind of pictures it can take. I found that the Idol 3’s camera was okay. Pictures taken outside were pretty good, although they are not going to be blowing anyone away. In pictues with bright colors, detail is sometimes lost in the colors. Pictures taken inside turned out about the same.

Low light pictures is where the Idol 3 struggled a bit. They lost some details and had a little extra noise. That being said, if you are just looking for a phone to take pictures to post on social media or share with friends, the Idol 3’s camera will suit you just fine.

Speakers

One of the big features of the Idol 3 is the dual front-facing speakers powered by JBL audio. After listening to music daily on this phone, I have to say that I am impressed. The speakers can get loud, but do not seem to suffer from much distortion at the high volumes. Most importantly, the sound is amazing, even through headphones.

The bass is not as strong or deep as you will find in something like Boomsound on the HTC One, but mids and highs are nice and clear. Alcatel touted that the sound quality was very good, and I imagine that anyone who listens to music from the Idol 3 will agree.

Performance

The Idol 3 is running on a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615, with four cores clocked at 1 GHz and four clocked at 1.5 GHz, coupled with 2GB of RAM. I found that, for the most part, performance was smooth. I could scroll through apps, recents, and web pages with minimal slowdowns. However, there were a few times when the Idol 3 would just seem to randomly slow down. It was still usable, but animations and scrolling seemed more choppy and less fluid. Unfortunately, I do not know what caused these dips in performance.

You should not expect to play any graphically intense games on the Idol 3, but it should handle most casual games pretty well. I tried it out with Limbo and suffered no slowdowns at all. This phone will not be winning any speed tests or benchmark scores, but the performance was better than I expected and fluid most of the time.

Battery

The Idol 3 is powered by a 2910 mAh battery. I am what you would consider a “power user” when it comes to my phone. It is rare for me to finish a day with less than 4 hours of screen on time for my phone. If a phone can survive my days, it should be able to survive anyones. I have three email accounts that pull down every five minutes. I also watch around an hour of YouTube over Wi-Fi and stream at least a hour of music over LTE.

The Idol 3 took my daily activities just fine and I had no worries about running out of battery before I got home. If you are a light to moderate user, you will definitely be pleased with the Idol 3’s battery life as it will easily last you through the day with battery to spare. If you are a heavier user like me, then I would wager the Idol 3 could handle your lifestyle just as well, maybe with less battery left over though. If you want to see the daily breakdown for battery life, you can check out all five days in the tabs below.

  • On the first day, I took the phone off the charger at 9 AM.
  • With this being the first day I had the phone, I used it quite a bit
  • I watched an hour of YouTube videos over Wi-Fi
  • I played an hour of games
  • I listened to an hour of music streaming over LTE
  • By 10 PM, I had to put the phone back on the charger at 7%
  • That may seem early, but I got 4 hours and 42 minutes of Screen On Time
  • On day two, I took the phone off the charger at 8 AM
  • I received a software update during the day, which is where you see the phone power off
  • After it updated, I recharged the battery to where it previously was to continue the test
  • I watched another hour or so of YouTube videos over Wi-Fi
  • I listened to an hour of music streaming over LTE
  • At midnight, I had reached 4 hours and 30 minutes of Screen On Time with 11% battery left
  • On day three, I took the phone off the charger at 9 AM
  • I did the usual hour of YouTube and hour of streaming music
  • Today was a lighter day and I only reached 3 hours and 43 minutes of Screen On Time by 1 AM
  • I finished the day with 15% battery left
  • On day four, I took the Idol 3 off the charger around 9 AM
  • I usually spend Saturdays with friends so I spend less time on my phone
  • I listened to about 2 hours of music streaming over LTE
  • I reached 3 hours and 20 minutes of Screen On Time by 1:30 AM
  • I finished the day with 21% left
  • On day five, I took the phone off the charger around 10 AM
  • On Sundays, I get an extra hour or so of Screen On Time that I do not usually get
  • Because of that, I had to put the Idol 3 back on the charger at 9:20
  • However, I got over 5 hours of Screen On Time for day 5

The biggest test I have for a phone is will I miss it when I stop using it? The answer for the Idol 3 is undoubtedly “Yes!”

It is definitely not a powerhouse, but the experience of using it is great. I will miss some of the features like the Reversible UI and double-tap to wake immediately. Of course, it is not perfect. Performance suffered from time to time and the camera is okay at best, but for 250, I would put the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 as the best budget flagship of 2015.

If you are in the market for an affordable phone that will still provide a great experience, the Idol 3 should be at the top of your list.

The Best Cell Phones For Seniors

Jitterbug Flip2. Most Affordable Flip Phone

What We Like Most:

  • Alexa compatibility
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • Optional medical alert features
  • Magnifier and flashlight

Overview

Cost: 74.99 from Lively

Lively’s Jitterbug Flip2 isn’t quite a smartphone, but with its Alexa compatibility, dual camera design, and safety features, it redefines how modern flip phones can work. Its simple navigation menu, large backlit keypad, and built-in SOS emergency button make it stand out from conventional flip phones.

The Jitterbug Flip2 is the easiest phone to use on this list. A simple list-based menu makes it easy to navigate the phone’s features, including phone calls, messages, the camera, and Alexa. Each of my calls also came through with high-quality audio.

One of my favorite Flip2 features is its Alexa functionality. Simply by using my voice, I could call contacts, send messages, and even ask questions. For example, I asked my Flip2: “How many teaspoons are in a cup?” My phone responded: “There are 48 teaspoons in a cup.” For any queries related to weather, news, or current events, this feature was highly useful.

There are two Lively service plan options with the Jitterbug Flip2. For 14.99 per month, you’ll get 300 minutes and 10 cents per text. For 19.99 a month, you can get unlimited talk and text. The Flip2 also offers the option to purchase a Health and Safety package, which turns your phone into a full-fledged medical alert system. Apple iPhone SE. Best Camera Quality

What We Like Most:

  • Intuitive design and voice commands
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Great camera quality
  • Thousands of free apps

Overview

Cost: 429 from Consumer Cellular

It’s not designed specifically for seniors, but the iPhone SE is the ideal option for someone looking to upgrade from a traditional flip phone. If you’re looking for a phone with internet access and stellar camera quality — and you don’t mind a slight learning curve — then the iPhone SE is a great place to start.

The iPhone SE excels in basic phone features. All our test calls worked exceptionally well, even when using hearing aids. The iPhone SE excels thanks to its built-in voice assistant, Siri. With this feature, you can make calls, send messages, and even browse the web simply by using your voice. The phone’s plethora of features may intimidate the uninitiated, but its voice commands make it easy to navigate.

The iPhone SE has the best camera of the phones on this list. All our test photos came through with a high level of definition, and they were easy to message to friends or post on social media. Newer iterations of the iPhone have higher-quality cameras, but the SE certainly does the job — and it costs less than half the iPhone 13.

The iPhone SE works with most major carriers, so it’s best to shop around to see which provider has the best deal. Consumer Cellular currently offers the iPhone SE for 429. Their unlimited talk and text plans with data also cost as low as 20 per month, with additional lines only costing 15 each.

Alcatel Go Flip 4. Best Battery Life

What We Like Most:

  • Long-lasting battery
  • Loud and high-quality speaker
  • Two-week battery life
  • Large internal display

Overview

Cost: 96 when purchased through T-Mobile

The first thing you’ll notice about the Alcatel Go Flip 4 is its simple clamshell design. Like past Alcatel phones, it features a small outer screen displaying the date and time and a larger internal display that enables you to navigate the phone’s features. What separates the Go Flip 4, however, are its long battery life, call clarity, and app store compatibility.

In our tests, calls came through incredibly clear on the Go Flip 4, and its loud speakerphone made it easy to communicate hands-free. The Go Flip 4 lasted about two weeks on a single charge, making it a great option for people who sometimes forget to charge their devices. Another feature that impressed us was the phone’s app store. Normally confined to smartphones, the app store enabled us to download many free apps for seniors, including WhatsApp. and a variety of games.

The Go Flip 4’s only downside is its camera. At only 2 megapixels, most of the images we captured came out fuzzy compared to pictures from other phones on this list.

The Alcatel Go Flip 4 can be purchased through T-Mobile for a one-time charge of 96 or monthly 4 payments. You can also purchase the phone from big-box retailers and pair it with a network of your choosing.
