Alarm Clock Does Not Work On Samsung Galaxy J5

The end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, Samsung met with the new line of smartphones Galaxy A and the intention to develop the “letter” series further. The idea here was simple. as part of the product line, the devices are aimed at different categories of consumers. In the beginning, everything went fine and understandable: Galaxy A. fashion models with a metal body, Galaxy E. a simplified version in plastic, Galaxy J. budget phones, Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. flagship products.

And then the South Korean manufacturer, as always, could not resist and created a mess. It all started with tablets. the Galaxy Tab A wasn’t made at all metallic, and the Galaxy Tab E was pulling not to the average, but to the budget level. Later came the Galaxy J5 and J7 smartphones, which in many respects repeat the Galaxy E5 and E7, offering somewhat simplified specifications and a slightly lower price. In fact, they replace the Galaxy E line, which, apparently, Samsung decided to eliminate.

But still on the way Galaxy J2, Galaxy J1 Pop (or Galaxy J1 Ace), Galaxy A8, Galaxy V Plus and it’s hard to imagine what else. Samsung again could not resist the temptation, and now we will have to understand this “salad”. And we will start with a review of the Galaxy J5 (SM-J500H), which, as was said, came to replace the Galaxy E5. This device will get Android 5.1 out of the box, and at the same time is not bad for taking a selfie.

Galaxy J5 review

As always, before we offer to watch a review of the Samsung Galaxy J5. so you can get a better idea about the smartphone:

Design

At the beginning of 2015, the Galaxy J series was presented only by one model. the Galaxy J1. This device was among the available Samsung products, although the title of “cheapest” does not pull. In any case, it looks simple, not very presentable, just to match its positioning.

Alarm Clock Does Not Work On Samsung Galaxy J5

In turn, representatives of the Galaxy E line looked a lot like the fashioned Galaxy A. In fact, they were given the same design by making tubes of plastic. And what about the Galaxy J5, which replaced the Galaxy E5? For him, Samsung decided to choose the appearance characteristic of the Galaxy J1.

Samsung Galaxy J5 looks like a younger J1, but increased in width and height. compared to the simplest model with 4.3″ up to 5.0″ The screen diagonal has grown. Recall exactly the same with the Galaxy E5. 5.0″. However, in terms of increasing the index in the Samsung series, the mess has not yet been arranged. the larger the number, the larger the display.

Nevertheless, there are differences in size. Galaxy J5 in comparison with E5 became a couple of millimeters wider and higher, and also its thickness increased from 7.3 to 8.5 mm. Significantly grown and weight. from 120 to 149 grams. But in relation to the increase in mass, the replacement of the battery with a more capacious one could affect 2600 mAh, compared to 2400 mAh for the Galaxy E5.

As a result, the Galaxy J5 received a rather faceless boring appearance that is not impressive, but also does not cause rejection. The smartphone resembles a large “remnant”, typical of Samsung as it is: a sloping back cover, three buttons under the screen, rounded corners. We have seen all this many times. The Galaxy J1 got rounded sidewalls.

The back cover has a smooth, slightly iridescent coating. It’s beautiful, but not so that “breathtaking”. Perhaps it is more important to evaluate the build quality, which Samsung has traditionally high. The phone is not a script, all the panels are well adjusted to each other.

Samsung Galaxy J5. this is not a “great prince”, but rather a “workhorse.” Exactly the same should apply to him.

Connectors and controls

In terms of ergonomics, the Galaxy J5 is nothing new. Compared to the Galaxy E5, it even got better. the case can now be disassembled, but more on that later.

On the front side, something new also appeared, namely an LED flash above the screen to the left of the earpiece. Samsung is taking more and more serious matters regarding selfie shooting, and a new generation of devices has begun to receive a flash for the front camera.

Below the display is a triple of traditional buttons: touch task manager and Back, as well as mechanical Home. Touch buttons are not highlighted, while the Galaxy E5 was not deprived of such a “service”. Another sign of Samsung Galaxy J5 belonging to a cheaper niche.

At the bottom bottom is the inscription DUOS. the full name of the Galaxy J5 Duos smartphone, since it supports two SIM cards. In the upper part, as always, the main camera lens, LED flash (second in a row!) And an external speaker are placed.

On the left side there are volume buttons.

On the right is the power button.

The upper end was left completely empty. There is not even an infrared port or microphone for noise reduction.

Below are microUSB and a 3.5 mm minijack for headphones and a headset. Samsung last moved down on most devices in 2015, except perhaps the Galaxy J1. Still, the audio jack at the bottom is really convenient. There is also a conversational microphone.

An ordinary rectangular battery is installed under the cover, which you will have to get to insert any of the three supported cards.

The compartment for the first SIM card is combined with the contact pad for the memory card. they are installed one above the other. The second “SIM card” is inserted to the left. MicroSIM cards are supported, although the Galaxy E5 worked with nanoSIM. for budget products, Samsung still prefers not to implement support for more compact communication cards. If you have any difficulty with disassembling the Galaxy J5 and installing SIM-cards, our short will help to solve the problem:

As already mentioned, the advantage of the Galaxy J5 relative to the E5 in terms of ergonomics lies in a collapsible housing and a removable battery. From a practical point of view, this option is better.

Case for Galaxy J5

Covers for the Galaxy J5 have not yet been sold in sufficient quantities, although Samsung will undoubtedly make branded cases. Well, accessories from the Galaxy E5 most likely will not work. this handset is a little thinner and smaller, so with a high probability they simply will not fit on the Galaxy J5.

However, at least one case for the Galaxy J5 we found. Some Aksberry flip case worth something around 20. Over time, others will appear.

Screen

It would seem, how so serious can differentiate smartphones Galaxy E5 and Galaxy J5? Regarding the E5 and A5, everything is clear. the first is made of plastic, and the second is made of metal. And how to “facilitate” the J5? Prompt. screen. If both older models are equipped with a Super AMOLED matrix, then the cheaper option is to leave the LCD screen, albeit a good one. However, a “miracle” happened. The Galaxy J5 also comes with a Super AMOLED display.

Samsung really didn’t save on the screen part. even its resolution is 1280×720, and not 960×540, as it could be. In short, the Galaxy J5 in terms of image is at least a “strong middling”. Having worked with a smartphone, there is absolutely no feeling that you have to deal with a relatively inexpensive handset. The picture, as always, is juicy and saturated, the viewing angles are maximum. At the same time, we recall the excellent black color, which is a distinctive feature of OLED technology.

According to objective measurements, the screen of the Galaxy J5 is also very good. For example, its maximum brightness level was 450.73 cd / m2, which is very decent, especially for Super AMOLED matrices. Not surprisingly, he behaves remarkably in the sun.

The color gamut of Super AMOLED is as always very wide. it easily covers the sRGB color space and approaches the closure of Adobe RGB.

The color temperature graph, as always, is even, but its overstatement could not be avoided, like almost all screens of smartphones or tablets. The temperature is at the level of 8000K, which is about 1500K above the optimum value. In other words, the picture is displayed colder than it should.

The gamma curve does not look the best. it passes noticeably above the reference curve 2.2. That is, the image is displayed in a lighter way than necessary.

There was an incident with the number of recognizable touches. The application showed only 2 pieces, although usually Super AMOLED screens less than 10 do not support. Perhaps this is not the final firmware version of the test sample of our Samsung Galaxy J5.

You cannot select profiles in the screen settings, which is also not typical for a Samsung smartphone equipped with an AMOLED display. Either the company decided to deprive such an opportunity of its “inexpensive” model, or again we must write off this shortcoming to a test sample.

With a larger screen, the Galaxy J5 we liked. Super AMOLED technology is one of the most advanced on the market and this can be seen if you work with such a phone.

Camera

As for the camera, the Galaxy J5 looks extremely interesting. First of all, because it is better than the Galaxy E5. The rear sensor received a resolution of 13 MP, against 8 MP in the older model. Obviously, Samsung decided to focus on this photographic component of the smartphone. And if you recall that he has as many as two flashes (rear and front), it turns out some wonderful and relatively affordable device for good shots and selfies.

The camera application corresponds to what can be seen in Samsung mobile devices based on Android 5. The interface is extremely simple and clear, switching modes is on a separate screen. And even there is an advanced mode where you can adjust white balance, ISO and exposure compensation.

If necessary, you can apply basic effects in real time: shades of gray, sepia or negative.

Maximum resolution is achieved with a 4: 3 aspect ratio.

You know, but it looks good. Of course, not the level of flagships, but the Samsung Galaxy J5 shoots very well for its price positioning. Sometimes there are misses with the determination of the white balance and in the dark the shots are not ideal, but on average everything is very worthy.

is captured in Full HD. Ultra HD resolution, or at least the intermediate version 2560×1440 is not available. It’s just that the level of the smartphone is not the same. it’s too early for them to master 4K.

The is also good. The white balance is determined correctly, frames are not overexposed and not darkened, the sequence is not blurred or blurred.

The rear camera shoots at a resolution of 5 MP and also with an aspect ratio of 4: 3.

The front sensor has a standard set of problems: white balance is not always determined correctly, chromatic aberration is visible, the picture lacks sharpness.

They did not artificially limit the capabilities of the front camera for shooting. it shoots it in Full HD resolution.

quality is more or less normal, but with a full set of problems listed for photos from the front camera.

The Galaxy J5 camera pleasantly surprised us. Samsung installed a good 13 MP sensor, and at the same time added its own proprietary photo-processing algorithms. The output was very decent quality.

Characteristics Galaxy J5

The July 2015 Galaxy J lineup includes three products: J1, J5, and J7. When the Galaxy J1 came out, a budget model was visible in it with the naked eye. if only, it had a slow dual-core Spreadtrum processor and only 512 MB of RAM! What was our surprise when in the Galaxy J5 and J7 we saw something more interesting, namely the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 and 615, respectively. The same chipsets are used in Galaxy E5 / E7 and even A5 / A7! It turns out that the new “jacks” are really capable of replacing the Galaxy E series.

One glance at the Galaxy J5 and E5 specs table is enough to understand: smartphones are almost identical. The similarity between them is small, and for some points (camera resolution and battery capacity) J5 is even better.

The Snapdragon 410 processor is a mid-range solution popular among smartphone makers. The chip provides the capabilities of four Cortex-A53 cores operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. As shown by repeated tests, including ours, its speed is great enough and enough to meet modern needs. The same applies to the Adreno 306 card. a very decent option, including for games.

The amount of RAM is 1.5 GB. After the Galaxy J1 with its 512 MB (or even the Galaxy J1 4G, which has 768 MB of RAM) there is so much “RAM”. it’s even kind of cool. Especially when you consider that exactly the same amount of it is installed in the Galaxy E5. If the Samsung Galaxy J5 really wanted to place it lower in positioning, then we would expect only 1 GB of RAM. And one can only rejoice. one and a half gigabytes in any case is better than one.

With the built-in memory, not everything is clear. In our instance, it was 8 GB and this is the only parameter by which the Galaxy J5 is worse than E5. But, according to information from the Internet, there are two versions of the smartphone in question: SM-J500H and SM-J500F. For the first in the specifications, we saw a mention of 8 GB of flash memory, and for the second. 16 GB.

Also, the moment associated with the connection remains unclear. The Qualcomm processor provides support for the LTE Cat.4 standard, but in the SM-J500H it can be artificially disabled, while the SM-J500F can be a “full-fledged” option with 4G. But it will be the first one that will be delivered to Russia and neighboring countries, at least in the beginning.

The result is the following scenario. Galaxy J5 has exactly the same characteristics as the Galaxy E5 (except for the “moment” with flash memory), it has a more capacious removable battery, a better camera, a front flash and a collapsible body. It is perhaps only a little thicker and heavier, which in part can be attributed to the battery. This is really a replacement for the Galaxy E5.

Performance testing

Without further ado, we decided to see if there were any “artificial” understatements in the performance of the Galaxy J5 compared to the E5. And the first one, among other things, works on a more recent version of Android: 5.1 versus 4.4.

We will try to attribute the loss of the Galaxy J5 in the old Smartbench 2012 test to the very Android 5.1. over time and updating the system, old applications may work worse if the developers do not optimize them in any way.

Another old Quadrant test, on the contrary, showed the superiority of the Galaxy J5, albeit insignificant. In reality, it will not be noticeable in the eye.

And the famous Antutu benchmark ensured parity for both smartphones. this is what we expect from devices with almost identical characteristics.

Galaxy E5 handles the browser better, but a lot depends on the software in which the test was run. Not only the version of the system is important, but also the version of the browser itself.

In three-dimensional benchmarks, we observe parity. we did not expect anything else.

According to our testing methodology, the Galaxy J5 showed better autonomy. But this result is more than expected: both smartphones are produced by the same manufacturer, equipped with the same processor, but the J5 has a 200 mAh more capacious battery. You can also recall that serious work has been done in Android 5.x to optimize energy consumption. If we ignore the comparison, then the remaining charge of 77% after passing our test can be considered a very decent indicator. almost at the level of various “thick” smartphones from B-brands with a 4000 mAh battery.

As you can see, the maximum energy consumption was on surfing the Internet via Wi-Fi, and especially on the cellular network, as well as on 3D games. There are no surprises here. this is often the most “resource-intensive” task.

By the way, there is an extreme energy saving mode. In the Samsung edition, it translates everything into black and white, which, thanks to the Super AMOLED screen, really allows you to save battery power.

As a result, we conclude that the Samsung Galaxy J5 is a productive smartphone for its level with remarkable autonomy.

Games on the Galaxy J5

With games on the Galaxy J5, everything went more or less well.

  • Ripide gp2: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Asphalt 7: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Asphalt 8: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Modern Combat 5: Blackout: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Dead trigger: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Dead trigger 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Real racing 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Shadowgun: dead zone: some delays are visible;
  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: did not start;
  • Frontline Commando 2: did not start;
  • Eternity warriors 2: did not start;
  • Eternity warriors 3: did not start;
  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Trial Xtreme 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Dead effect: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Iron Man 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • Dead target: excellent, the game does not slow down.

None of the tested games slowed down or even reduced the quality of the graphics in order to increase the speed of work. Is it possible that the four games refused to start, but we write off this on the damp firmware of the test sample Galaxy J5.

Keep in mind that the Galaxy J5 comes out in the summer of 2015, its indisputable advantage is the presence of the Android 5.1 system right out of the box. Of course, this Samsung smartphone was not the first device based on this system. The LG G4, for example, came out a few months earlier. But the Galaxy J5 is never the flagship, in general it is a product from the mid-price range, where new versions of the OS do not come so quickly. In general, Samsung is well done. However, note that Android 5.1 works in 32-bit mode, despite the presence of a 64-bit processor. There is nothing wrong with that, but the potential of the chipset could be revealed more fully.

The TouchWIZ shell is familiar to those who have at least once dealt with Samsung devices. Having changed several generations, it has been seriously redesigned and improved, but the general concept has been retained with more.

On the Samsung Galaxy J5, the proprietary interface is what you can see on the Galaxy S6, but in a simplified form. It is understandable. you have to deal not with a top-end smartphone.

Do not think, the Galaxy J5 is endowed with everything necessary for working with software: a calculator, alarm clock, calendar, FM radio, file manager, gallery, email client, browser and so on. Everything is in place and even something else.

Smart Manager has become the standard app for Samsung devices in 2015. precisely, those devices that come with Android 5.0 and a newer system. Recall that this is an aggregator program that combines utilities for saving energy, cleaning the built-in and random access memory, as well as an antivirus.

Cooperation with Microsoft continues and Samsung pre-installs some software giant applications. The Galaxy J5 went to Skype, the OneNote note-taking app, and the OneDrive cloud storage client. The latter provides 100 GB of space.

Other programs are already familiar. For example, a file manager.

A traditional alarm clock. precisely, the Clock application, combining functions for working with time: alarm clock, world time, stopwatch and timer.

Corporate calendar S Planner.

It should be noted that the TouchWIZ shell combines the features of Samsung’s proprietary interface and the innovations of Android 5. For example, the notification bar got “old” access to the settings, but the notifications themselves are displayed in a new style. Well, we also saw the task manager in the form of tabs on the Galaxy Note 4 with its initial firmware based on Android 4.4.

Total Galaxy J5 is equipped with a proprietary shell from Samsung, which is convenient, functional, well-debugged and provides the necessary set of software for work.

Conclusion

Having received the Galaxy J5 in our hands, the first thing we did was to find out how it differs from the Galaxy E5. This was really interesting, because if you follow the logic of Samsung, announced in early 2015, it should have been one of the most affordable 5-inch smartphones of the company. And this “accessibility” should be achieved by deterioration of the characteristics of the older model. But that is the point. this did not happen!

Why is Samsung on the market two in many very similar smartphones, with the Galaxy J5 having a newer Android at the start, a better camera and a more capacious battery? The answer is one. Galaxy E5 will be withdrawn from the market. There is nothing wrong with this, except for the confusion: at first they explained to us that the Galaxy J are cheap smartphones, but now it turns out that it’s not very.

The Galaxy J5 itself looks pretty good. It is perfectly assembled, it has good characteristics, it does not slow down, it has a modern camera and even a front flash, the new Android 5.1, Super AMOLED screen and very decent autonomy. True, the design of this phone is not so very. not bad, but a typical “Samsung remnant”, which has been seen more than once. But this point is not important for everyone when buying. And what about the price?

Price Galaxy J5

It was impossible to buy the Galaxy J5 at the time of writing this article, so we cannot yet name the cost of this smartphone. At the same time, the Galaxy E5 in mid-2015 cost 300, which is very little for a similar device. If the Galaxy J5 will be sold at the same price, then this is already not bad, but if even cheaper, it’s generally wonderful.

Huawei P8 Lite is the new smartphone of 2015, a simplified version of the flagship P8. The device offers a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280×720, an 8-core HiSilicon Kirin 620 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of RAM, 13 MP camera and a 2200 mAh battery. That is, plus or minus this phone is quite suitable as a competitor to the Galaxy J5. True, his price is still at 280.

Lenovo S90 is still relevant. The sensational model is still for sale, and at a very “tasty” price of about 240-250. In exchange, you can get a device with a 5-inch AMOLED screen, 16 GB of internal memory, Snapdragon 410 processor, 13 MP camera, a metal non-separable case and a design similar to the iPhone 6.

In general, while the exact price of the Galaxy J5 is still unknown, we were not able to highlight the serious flaws in the smartphone.

  • high build quality;
  • flash for the front camera;
  • decent quality of the main camera;
  • Super AMOLED screen with HD resolution;
  • good performance;
  • excellent autonomy;
  • convenient location of the audio jack;
  • collapsible housing;
  • Android 5.1 out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy J5 Firmware Update

Galaxy J5 received Android 5.1. the latest version of the Google operating system at the time of release. And until the fall of 2015, nothing will be newer, so Samsung is just fine. Another question is whether Android 5.2 (or what will be next) will get the smartphone in question. This will become clear no earlier than 2016. Nevertheless, instructions for flashing will not be superfluous.

So, for flashing the Galaxy J5 you need to do the following:

  1. download firmware for Galaxy J5;
  2. download the Odin program on the PC and make sure that the smartphone has enough charge;
  3. enter the smartphone into Download Mode (simultaneously holding down the keys “off” “volume down” “home button”), then press “Volume up”;
  4. connect a USB cable to the device;
  5. in the Odin application on your computer, select files from the archive with firmware:
    • for graph PIT. file with pit extension;
    • for PDA. a file whose name contains the word CODE, if there is none, then be aware that this is the heaviest file in the archive;
    • for CSC. a file whose name contains the word CSC;
    • for Phone. file containing MODEM in the name;
    • Note. If the files for the CSC, Phone and PIT graphs are not in the archive with the firmware, then we sew exclusively using the single file method, i.e. indicate the location of the firmware in the PDA column, and leave the remaining lines empty.
    • make sure that Odin has the checkboxes set to “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time. ” If the location of the pit file was specified, then the “Re-Partition” checkbox will be set automatically;
    • press the “Start” button and observe how the firmware process is. The phone may reboot several times during installation and in no case should you disconnect the cable from it until the message “All threads completed” appears in the Odin log or the green information window with the word “PASS!” Lights up.

    The firmware update process traditionally lasts several minutes (from 5 to 15), and if successful, you will be prompted to configure the smartphone according to your preferences. After that, you can get to work.

    If suddenly something did not work out, you can ask about it in the comments under the article.
