The iPhone X (pronouncing iPhone Ten correctly, not iPhone X) is a giant leap forward in the smartphone world. The device received a completely new design and a number of innovative technologies.

Super Retina OLED Display

Face id

The iPhone X no longer has a Touch ID, and user authentication is performed using the Face ID facial recognition system. The system is a camera and a sensor located in a recess on the top of the iPhone X. Face ID is a very complex technology and is based on the TrueDepth camera system.

TrueDepth consists of a Point Projector, an infrared camera and an infrared emitter that detects a face. When the user looks at the screen of the locked iPhone, an infrared emitter detects and illuminates the face. Then the infrared camera creates its IR image, and the Projector of points with the help of more than 30 thousand infrared points collects a model of the face.

An infrared image and a point model are sent via neural networks to the new A11 Bionic processor to create a mathematical template. The resulting template is then mapped to the iPhone owner’s face image set during Face ID setup.

All data is stored in Secure Enclave, which makes it useless in case of loss or theft of the device. The recognition process takes place locally on the iPhone, and no data is sent to the server.

It is noteworthy that Face ID only works when the user purposefully looks at the screen of the iPhone X.

The Cupertinians also tried to make it impossible to deceive the system with the help of a photograph, or even a well-made volume mask.

Selfie portrait mode
