What generation Apple Pencil is supported by your iPad?

Find out which generation Apple Pencil is compatible with your iPad.

Apple Pencil (1st generation)

If you have an Apple Pencil (1st generation), you can use it with the following iPad models.

  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5 inches
  • iPad Pro 9.7 inches
  • iPad (6th generation)

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

If you have an Apple Pencil (2nd generation), you can use it with the following iPad models.

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro 11 inches

Pairing Apple Pencil (1st Generation) and iPad

If you have an Apple Pencil (1st generation), remove the cap from it and insert the instrument into the Lightning connector on the iPad.

When the Create Pair button appears, click it.

The pair created with the Apple Pencil is saved until you restart the iPad, turn on airplane mode, or pair with another iPad. If necessary, just pair again.

Pairing Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) and iPad

If you have an Apple Pencil (2nd generation), attach it to the magnetic mount on the side of the iPad Pro as follows.

Using Apple Pencil

Using the Apple Pencil, you can write, take notes and draw directly in the built-in programs and programs from the App Store. Some programs, such as Notes, support the functions of creating diagrams and sketches.

To create a drawing or sketch in Notes, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Notes program.
  2. Click to create another note.
  3. To add a scheme, click the icon. If you do not see the icon, update the Notes program. To add a sketch, click the icon, and then click Add Sketch.
  4. Start drawing. You can choose any of the available tools for drawing and flowers, and in case of an error. use the eraser. While drawing, the Apple Pencil can be tilted to make the line more expressive, and increase the pressure to make the line darker.

If you draw an Apple Pencil at the edge of the screen, iOS does not activate “Control Center”, “Notification Center” or “Multitasking”. You can draw anywhere on the screen without any interference.

The Apple Pencil (2nd generation) allows you to double-tap the bottom of it to quickly switch to the tool you used last. To change the settings for double-tap, go to the “Settings” Apple Pencil and select one of the following options.

  • Switch between current tool and eraser
  • Switch between current tool and previous
  • Color palette display
  • Does not burn

Double-tap only works in supported programs (for example, Notes).

Charging Apple Pencil (1st generation)

To charge the Apple Pencil (1st generation), plug it into the Lightning connector on your iPad. You can also charge it through the USB power adapter that came with the Apple Pencil. The Apple Pencil will charge quickly from any of these power sources.

Apple Pencil (1st generation) compatible with iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation), iPad Pro 10.5 inches, iPad Pro 9.7 inches and iPad (6th generation).

Charging Apple Pencil (2nd Generation)

If you need to charge the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) 1, make sure that the iPad is turned on Bluetooth. Then attach the Apple Pencil to the magnetic mount on the right side of the iPad, in the center. 2

  2. If you are charging the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) from the iPad Pro and your keyless car access device (electronic opener) is nearby, aliasing may prevent you from opening the car with the electronic opener. In this case, you can simply remove the iPad Pro from the electronic opener or disconnect the Apple Pencil from the iPad Pro and store it separately. When the Apple Pencil is finished charging, any signal overlap will disappear.
